Catching up with MVP Jon Berti
Leading up to spring training, we'll check in periodically with Fisher Cats alumni to see how they are spending their off-season. In this edition, we'll chat with 2014 Fisher Cats MVP Jon Berti, who spent his fall playing in the Arizona Fall League.
New Hampshire Fisher Cats: What was your experience like in the Arizona Fall League?
Jon Berti: The AFL was a great experience for me. I was a lot of fun to be able to play down in Arizona. It was my first time down there and I was very impressed. I had some high expectations coming in because of what I had heard about the league and it definitely meet those expectations.
NHFC: What did you think of the new pace of play rules? How did they affect the game and what kind of adjustments were there for you?
JB: I thought the changes were just OK for the most part. With all the pitching changes that occur in an AFL game, I felt like it was tough to gauge if it really did speed up the game or not.
NHFC: Do you think the game needs to speed up?
JB: I wouldn't mind seeing the game speed up a little bit. But I'm not a big fan of having any kind of clock. That's one of the things that I think makes the game so unique from other sports.
NHFC: When does the off-season program ramp up?
JB: I have ramped up my offseason program already. I took about a week off before getting back into the gym.
NHFC: How would you rate your 2014 season?
JB: I thought it was a pretty good season in NH. I really enjoyed playing and living there over the time of the season. But there's always room for improvement and I'm looking forward to the 2015 season
NHFC: Do you have specific goals set for 2015?
JB: I don't really like to put specific goals down, especially numbers-wise. I think it just puts a limit on your potential. I'm just trying to play the game hard, improve as a player, and help my team win on a daily basis.
NHFC: Any vacations planned for the off-season?
JB: Making a trip out to California after Christmas with a couple of friends. Haven't seen much of California so I'm looking forward to checking it out.
NHFC: Do you have a favorite holiday tradition, or a favorite gift from your childhood?
JB: There isn't anything much better than turkey and mashed potatoes while watching football with family over Thanksgiving! Can't say I can pinpoint an all-time favorite gift. I just really enjoy watching the movie Christmas Story on Christmas day with the family as we open up gifts.
