G-Braves pound Louisville
The Lead: The Gwinnett Braves rode a 12-hit performance in beating the Louisville Bats 7-1 in game three of the four-game series on Saturday night at Louisville Slugger Field, in Louisville, Kentucky. The Braves won their second in a row in the series and fourth game in seven on the road trip. The Braves are now 22-26 with the win. The Bats drop to 22-27.
It Was Over When: In the 3rd inning, Barbaro Canizares delivered a two out, two RBI double to left scoring Luis Bolivar and Joe Thurston to make it 3-0 Braves. Bolivar, earlier in the inning, knocked in Jordan Schafer with a single to center giving the Braves a 1-0 lead.
Braves Beat:
On the Mound: Joe Ortegano got his second win for Gwinnett since getting the call-up from Class A Myrtle Beach. His line: 5.2 IP, 4H, 1R/ER, 1BB, 3K. Mike Dunn entered with two outs in the sixth: 1.1 IP, 2K. Stephen Marek pitched the eight: 1.0 IP, 1K. Mariano Gomez closed the game with a scoreless ninth: 1.0 IP, 1H.
At the plate: Schafer went 3-for-5 and scored twice. Joe Thurston is 2-for-5 with an RBI. Barbaro Canizares has two RBIs. Clint Sammons went 2-for-4; and Mitch Jones hit a two-run pinch hit homer in the bottom of the eight; his team leading 8th homer of the season.
The opposition:
On the Mound: RHP Matt Klinker in his first start since being called up from Class AA Carolina got the loss. His line: 6.0 IP, 7H, 4R/ER, 1BB, 5K. Jared Burton worked the seventh: 1.0 IP, 1H. Federico Baez worked the eighth inning: 1.0 IP, 4H, 3R/ER, 0BB, 0K. Logan Ondrusek finished out the game: 1.0 IP, 1K.
At the plate: Chris Burke went 3-for-4, scoring the teams' only run. Yonder Alonso was 1-for-3 with the Bats' only RBI, knocking in Burke with a single to center in the bottom of the fourth.
On Deck: The Braves and the Bats play the finale of their four-game series in Louisville tomorrow night at 6:05 p.m. RHP Tim Gustafson (4-2, 5.82ERA) is scheduled to start for the Braves. Louisville will start LHP Travis Wood (2-4, 4.14 ERA).
