Winter League Report for January 12

January 12, 2015

This is a short week for the Winter League Report - mostly because it took so long to get caught up on three weeks worth of numbers for last week's report. This week's report is brought to you by the number three. In transaction news this week, three former I-Cubs find new homes and the Cubs add three new minor league free agents. On the field, the top three RBI guys in the Mexican League playoffs are all former Iowa Cubs as the Caribbean leagues all march through their post-seasons. Let's get started…

TRANSACTIONS

The Cubs announced their signing of OF Chris Denorfia on January 9. Denorfia split last season between the Padres and Mariners and hit .230 (76-for-330) with three home runs and 21 RBI. San Diego traded him to Seattle on July 31 for a pair of minor leaguers. Denorfia has a lifetime .272 (530-for-1950) average with 38 home runs and 178 RBI in 705 big league games over the last nine seasons with Cincinnati (2005-06), Oakland (2008-09), San Diego (2010-14) and Seattle. To make room for Denorfia on the 40-man roster, the Cubs designated LH Michael Kickham for assignment. Kickham had just been claimed off waivers from San Francisco on Dec. 23.

According to Baseball America, the Cubs have re-signed INF Chris Valaika to a minor league deal. Valaika was Iowa's best player at times last year and was a valuable member of Iowa's lineup, usually hitting between Javy Baez and Kris Bryant in the batting order when both players were at triple-A. Valaika hit .278 (98-for-352) with 10 home runs and 50 RBI in 102 games with Iowa before getting called up in August. He hit .231 (28-for-131) with three home runs and 13 RB In 44 games with Chicago.

The Cubs also signed C Taylor Teagarden and RHPs Jorge De Leon and Andres Santiago on minor league deals. The Cubs drafted Teagarden in the 22nd round of the 2002 draft out of Creekview High School in Carrollton, Texas, but he didn't sign and played three seasons at the University of Texas. The Rangers drafted him in the third round in 2005. He hit .303 (54-for-178) with 14 home runs and 39 RBI in 55 games for Las Vegas last season and was 4-for-28 (.143) with a home run and five RBI in nine games with the Mets. The 31-year-old Teagarden is a right-handed batter and could be a good complement, and veteran mentor, for the Cubs to team with left-handed hitting Rafael Lopez as Iowa's catching tandem in 2015. De Leon pitched at the top three levels of the Astros system last year. He had no record and a 4.91 ERA (4ER/7.1IP) in nine games in the big leagues. Most of his season was spent at triple-A Oklahoma City where he was 3-3 with a 2.63 ERA (14ER/48.0IP) for the RedHawks. In seven games against the Cubs, he was 0-1 with a 1.00 ERA (1ER/9.0IP), two walks, and 11 strikeouts. Santiago was 6-8 with a 4.47 ERA (64ER/129.0IP) in 26 games (24 starts) at double-A Chattanooga last year in the Dodgers' organization. In his final start of 2014, he pitched a no-hitter against Tennessee on August 28. He allowed just one walk and struck out 12 in the game.

OF Tyler Colvin (2011 with Iowa) signed with the Marlins. Colvin spent 2014 in the Giants' organization and hit .223 (31-for-139) with two home runs and 18 RBI in 57 games for the eventual World Champions. He also hit .227 (37-for-163) with two home runs and 18 RBI in 50 games for triple-A Fresno. RH Marcos Mateo (2010-11, '13-14) signed with the Padres. Mateo was 3-0 with a 3.86 ERA (16ER/37.1IP) and two saves in 33 games with Iowa last year and went 4-4 with a 4.46 ERA (42ER/84.2IP) and five saves in 70 games in his Iowa career. 1B Lars Anderson (2014) signed with the Dodgers. Anderson hit .287 (25-for-87) with four home runs and 19 RBI in 34 games for the I-Cubs last year, but missed a lot of time due to an illness that caused dizziness. He hit .357 (10-for-28) with two homers and seven RBI in eight games in July before finishing the year at double-A.

In coaching news, Mark Grudzielanek (rehab stints in 2003-04) was named the manager for Kane County in suburban Chicago, now an affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

During the regular season, Lake led the league in stolen bases (21) and was obviously focused on working counts and having long at-bats as he tied for the league lead in both walks (30) and strikeouts (51). The Red Sox signed him on June 11, but released him on July 26 after give games at rookie Lowell and 18 games at triple-A.  He played his first (and only) game with Mayaguez on Nov. 8.

SCOTT MAINE, LHP (2010-12)

REGULAR SEASON: 0-0, 4.15 ERA (4ER/8.2IP), 9G, 7H, 2HB, 4BB, 9K

Maine began the 2014 season with Bridgeport in the independent Atlantic League before signing with the Reds on June 30. He was 1-0 with a 6.10 ERA (7ER/10.1IP) in 13 games at double-A Pensacola before getting released on August 7.  Maine held his opponent scoreless in seven of his nine regular season appearances for Mayaguez.

POST-SEASON: 0-0, 6.75 ERA (1ER/1.1IP), 3G, 0H, HB, BB

JONATHAN SANCHEZ, LHP (2014)

REGULAR SEASON: 0-1, 6.48 ERA (6ER/8.1IP), 3GS, 5H, HR, 2HB, 8BB, 9K

Sanchez opened the 2014 season with Iowa, but pitched in just one game before going on the disabled list with a shoulder strain. He rehabbed the injury at the Cubs' complex in Arizona, but was released on July 2 and is currently a free agent.  His last regular season appearance was Dec. 12.

POST-SEASON: 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 5G, 5.0IP, BB, 5K

GIGANTES de CAROLINA (3-4 IN ROUND ROBIN)

BRENDAN HARRIS, INF (2004)

REGULAR SEASON: 12G, .378 (17-for-45), 4R, 3B, 6RBI, 5BB, 7K

After 14 games in Mexico to begin his winter league season (see above), Harris joined Carolina and played his first game on Dec. 13. He hit safely in 10 of his 12 regular season games, including a four-hit game on Dec. 29 at Mayaguez.

POST-SEASON: 6G, .238 (5-for-21), 3R, 2B, HR, RBI, 3BB, 3K

CRIOLLOS de CAGUAS (2-5 IN ROUND ROBIN)

No players or coaches have Iowa Cubs ties.

SENADORES de SAN JUAN (ELIMINATED)

JOHN ANDREOLI, OF (CUBS PROSPECT)

REGULAR SEASON: 26G, .216 (19-for-88), 12R, 5DBL, 3B, HR, 3RBI, 8BB, 21K, 9/11SB

Andreoli is using winter ball as a way to make up for lost time due to injury at double-A Tennessee this past season. In 61 games for the Smokies, he hit .211 (44-for-209) and stole 28 bases before a wrist injury ended his season on June 9.  Andreoli tied for the league lead with nine stolen bases in the regular season for San Juan.

JONATHAN MOTA, INF (2010-12, '14)

REGULAR SEASON: 28G, .218 (22-for-101), 13R, 5DBL, HR, 7RBI, 4BB, 14K, SB

Mota has played in 861 games in the Cubs' minor league system over the last 10 seasons, including 142 with the Iowa Cubs. He hit .261 (37-for-142) with three home runs and 18 RBI in 47 games with Iowa this past season. Mota's last regular season game with San Juan was Dec. 14.

ARIZONA FALL LEAGUE

The Arizona Fall League came to a close on Nov. 15 with Salt River defeating the Peoria Javelinas 14-7 to win the title this year.

MESA SOLAR SOX (15-14, 2nd Place, 2.5 GB)

JACOB HANNEMANN: 17G, .279 (17-for-61), 5R, 4DBL, 2TRPL, 7RBI, 5BB, 12K, 0/2SB

The left-handed hitting Hannemann batted .300 (15-for-50) against right-handed pitching and .182 (2-for-11) against southpaws while playing both corner outfield spots and a few games at designated hitter. The Cubs drafted Hannemann in the third round of the 2013 draft out of BYU and Baseball America rated him as the organization's 17th-best prospect entering the 2014 season. He hit .254 (87-for-342) with 14 doubles, six home runs, and 39 RBI in 88 games with Kane County before getting promoted to Daytona in July. He hit .241 (35-for-145) with nine doubles, two home runs and 12 RBI in 36 games in the Florida State League.

DANNY LOCKHART, INF: 6G, .250 (5-for-20), 3R, 3RBI, 2BB, SB

Lockhart made his debut with the Solar Sox on Oct. 31 after Addison Russell left the team, and started games at second base, third base, and shortstop. Lockhart hit .284 (93-for-327) with 18 doubles and 28 RBI in 89 games for single-A Kane County this season. He had a brief stint with the I-Cubs in 2013 for two games in Tacoma as a fill-in from short-season Boise.

BIJAN RADEMACHER, OF: 11G, .350 (14-for-40), 11R, 2DBL, 3B, HR, 9RBI, 5BB, 3K, 4SB

Rademacher is on the "taxi-squad" and is only eligible to play twice a week for Mesa. He made the most of those opportunities, hitting safely in nine of his 10 starts. His biggest game came in his final start on Nov. 12 as he went 2-for-4 with a home runs and four RBI. The Cubs drafted Rademacher in the 13th round in 2012 out of Orange Coast Community College in California. He batted .281 (108-for-384) with 22 doubles, six triples, 10 home runs, and 56 RBI in 111 games with Daytona in 2014.

ADDISON RUSSELL, SS: 11G, .196 (9-for-46), 8R, 2B, 2HR, 10RBI, 3BB, 13K, SB

Russell is rated among the top five prospects in all of minor league baseball and left the Solar Sox after a two-week stint. He missed time before the Cubs acquired him from Oakland in July due to hamstring injuries, so he was in the AFL for a second year just to make up on for some lost at-bats. He finished strong with two home runs, including one in his last at-bat, and seven RBI over his final three games. Russell hit .294 (57-for-194) with 12 home runs and 36 RBI in 50 games with Tennessee in the regular season after joining the Cubs.

DAN VOGELBACH, 1B: 21G, .261 (18-for-69), 8R, 4DBL, 8RBI, 17BB, 11K, SB

Vogelbach finished the AFL season on a five-game hitting streak that included three multi-hit games. He didn't hit for power, but he did finish tied for second in the league in walks and made a lot of contact. The Cubs drafted Vogelbach in the second round of the 2011 draft and Baseball America rated him as the organization's ninth-best prospect entering the 2014 season. Vogelbach hit .268 (129-for-482) with 28 doubles, 16 home runs, and 76 RBI in 132 games with Daytona this year.

ZACH CATES, RHP: 0-0, 9.28 ERA (11ER/10.2IP), 9G, 17H, 2HR, 6BB, 8K

Cates had two really tough outings to distort his numbers in an overall solid performance. He allowed five runs in 1.1 innings on Oct. 21 at Surprise and four runs on four hits, including a home run, on Oct. 30 against Scottsdale. He allowed just two earned runs in 8.1 innings in his other seven games. The Cubs acquired Cates from the Padres in the same deal that brought Anthony Rizzo to Chicago in 2012 and Baseball America rated him the organization's 27th-best prospect entering 2014. Cates combined to go 3-2 with a 4.08 ERA (24ER/53.0IP) in 36 games between Daytona and Tennessee this year.

GERARDO CONCEPCION, LHP: 1-1, 5.87 ERA (10ER/15.1IP), 9G, 16H, 11R, HR, 9BB, 7K

Concepcion had an up-and-down run through the AFL. Hard to evaluate how he did without seeing any of his performances, but nine walks and just seven strikeouts in 15.1 innings is a cause for concern. The Cubs signed the 22-year-old Concepcion to a five-year major league contract after he defected from Cuba in 2012. He has battled injuries and command issues in his brief time in the organizations. He had his most productive season in 2014, going 4-2 with a 3.32 ERA (22ER/59.2IP) in 29 relief appearances between rookie Mesa, Kane County, and Daytona. He walked 23 and struck out 55 on the year.

C.J. EDWARDS, RHP: 1-0, 2.25 ERA (3ER/12.0IP), 5GS, 7H, 7BB, 11K

After shoulder issues forced him to the disabled list during much of the regular season, the best news was Edwards took all of his turns with no injury issues. He also pitched a scoreless inning for the East All-Star Team on Nov. 1. He finished fourth in the league, and first among starters, with a .154 opponents' batting average and was second among starters with a 9.60 strikeouts per nine innings ratio. Edwards is widely considered the top pitching prospect in the Cubs' organization. Baseball America ranked him third overall in the organization entering the year. Edwards was sidelined by a shoulder injury after just three starts at Tennessee, but did return to make six starts in August. He was 1-2 with a 2.44 ERA (13ER/48.0IP) in 10 starts with the Smokies overall. With a strong showing in the AFL and a healthy run through spring training, Edwards would be a candidate to start 2015 in Iowa's starting rotation.

IVAN PINEYRO, RHP: 1-0, 1.98 ERA (3ER/13.2IP), 7G, 4GS, 11H, HR, 4BB, 16K

Pineyro didn't allow a run in 6.2 innings over his final four appearances, including two in relief. Like Edwards, Pineyro spent a considerable amount of time on Tennessee's disabled list in 2014 and finished 0-4 with a 5.55 ERA (30ER/48.2IP) in 11 starts for the Smokies. The Cubs acquired Pineyro from the Washington Nationals in exchange for Scott Hairston in July of 2013.
