Daytona Drops Finale to Jupiter
The Hammerheads took the momentum from their win on Saturday into Sunday as they scored a run in the top of the first inning. Starter Brooks Raley gave up three hits and a run in his first inning of work. Raley calmed down and kept the Hammerhead batters at bay for the next four innings as he gave up only one more hit and kept the score at 1-0.
The sixth inning was not as successful for Raley as the southpaw gave up three hits and a sacrifice fly. He left the ballgame with no one out in the sixth with runners on second and third and one run already across the board. He was relieved by Michael Perconte who allowed just one more run in the inning with a sacrifice fly off the bat of catcher Jose Ceballos. With the Hammerheads adding two runs in the top of the sixth the lead extended to 3-0.
The Cubs did have nine hits on the evening but the run production was almost non-existent. Daytona did score one run in the ninth inning as catcher Luis Flores got things started with a double and was later brought in off a single by Junior Lake. The comeback was quickly silenced as it was a little to late for the Cubs to try and climb back in this contest.
The starting pitcher for the Jupiter Hammerheads Joey O'Gara (1-0) looked very strong in his five innings of scoreless baseball. This was O'Gara's first game with the Hammerheads as he was just called up from extended spring training. Brook Raley had a strong outing for the Daytona Cubs but was the tough-luck loser in this contest. Reliever Andy Loomis slammed the door for Jupiter in the ninth and collected his first save of the season.
The Cubs have a day off on Monday night but will continue action Tuesday night as the Charlotte Stone Crabs come into Daytona for a four game series. It will be another Silver Sluggers Tuesday and Baseball Bingo out at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Come support the Cubs this week as they continue to play good baseball.
