Orioles Prospect: Pat Egan
The Orioles minor league farm system is loaded with young pitching talent on the cusp of making it to the next level. The Baysox have a bevy of young pitchers providing solid depth in their rotation and in their bullpen. One such pitcher is right-hander Pat Egan, a long reliever who is quickly being recognized as one of the organization's up and coming pitching prospects.
At an imposing 6'7", Egan uses his tall frame and herky-jerky motion to increase the angle on his pitches and deceive hitters. His pitching arsenal includes a 4-seam fastball, changeup, sinker, and a sinker-slider hybrid.
Since being drafted in the 31st round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft out of Quinnipiac University, Egan has steadily progressed through the Orioles minor league system. He spent his first season as a professional playing for the Bluefield Orioles primarily as a starter in 2007. Egan was a member of the Aberdeen Ironbirds in 2008 starting 14 games and finishing the season with an impressive 3.24 ERA. Last season, Egan was moved to the role of long reliever for the Delmarva Shorebirds before being promoted to the Single-A Frederick Keys.
Baysox fans got a chance to see Egan pitch in late May last season when he appeared in three games for Bowie. As a critical member of the Baysox this season, the right-hander has developed into manager Brad Komminsk's go-to long reliever. In over 32 innings of work, he has only surrendered seven earned runs with a 1.95 ERA in addition to holding opponents to a mere .184 batting average. Egan leads the team in wins (5) and is tied for the team lead in saves (3).
The key for Egan's success is his high level of consistency. Baysox pitching coach Kennie Steenstra said that Egan is someone who he can rely on in the bullpen to come in and consistently pound the strike zone. In addition, Steenstra said that Egan's strong work ethic shows the other players and pitchers on the ballclub how to work hard and get the job done.
If Egan continues to pitch well and maintain the level of consistency he is pitching with, he could continue to rise up the ranks in the Orioles' organization.
