Former River Cat Byrnes joins beer league

June 2, 2010
It's not just the size of the ball that is different for Eric Byrnes, who was recently released from the Seattle Mariners and three days later joined a softball league despite still collecting a Major League Baseball paycheck.

The former fan favorite at Raley Field currently plays for a slow-pitch beer league softball team in the San Francisco area and can be seen hitting bombs over the fence and having a smile that many haven't seen for awhile.

Byrnes may just be the highest paid Dutch Goose softball player of all-time, as he will be collecting $11 million this season, 10.6 million from the Arizona Diamondbacks and $400,000 from the Mariners.

The 34-year old Byrnes played for the Sacramento River Cats from 2000-2002 and was a favorite among the fans for his outrageous catches.

Byrnes is known for making athletic catches on fly balls in the outfield and for his energetic personality, both on and off the field. So whether it's a slow pitch or a 95 mph fastball down the pipe, Byrnes isn't throwing in his towel just yet and can still be seen running the bases every Wednesday night.
