Robert Morin: 2015 Matt Beveridge Award Winner
CORPUS CHRISTI - Karnes City senior outfielder Robert Morin is the seventh recipient of the Matt Beveridge Award.
Morin will be honored at the 2015 South Texas Winter Baseball Banquet on Wednesday, January 28, at the Solomon P. Ortiz Center. The event is presented by the Corpus Christi Caller-Times and iHeartMedia. Tickets are on sale at the Whataburger Field Box Office. To order by phone, call 361-561-HOOK (4665).
Morin is a four-year varsity baseball team member who was All-District 28-2A as a junior. Last spring, he won the Curtis Perkins Award as the Badgers' most outstanding player. Morin starred on the gridiron as well in 2014, earning all-district honors at wide receiver and cornerback, plus Academic All-State by the Texas High School Coaches Association. He also runs track and cross country.
Morin's GPA is 3.9 and he is ranked 8th in the Class of 2015. This is his second year as a class officer, and he's active in the National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Future Farmers of America and Youth Works Organization. A member of Karnes City Catholic Church, Morin leads weekly student-athlete devotionals.
Miller sophomore A.G. Ayala, Gregory-Portland senior Gilbert DeLeon, Orange Grove junior Drake Osborn, Odem senior Payne Whatley, and Incarnate Word Academy senior Joseph McNiff were the other 2015 Matt Beveridge Award finalists.
Six years ago, the Corpus Christi Hooks established the award to honor the life and legacy of one of the Coastal Bend's most beloved and respected high school athletes. Area high school baseball coaches nominate players based on four attributes: character, courage, leadership, and spirit.
Matt excelled in both football and baseball for the King Mustangs. He had a heart for God, his family, church, and teammates.
Following his junior year, Matt was diagnosed with cancer. Through two years of treatment, Matt showed tremendous courage battling the disease, inspiring everyone around him.
