Mejia, Tigers trim Mets

July 18, 2006
Gilberto Mejia went 2-for-4 and singled in the go-ahead run in the 10th inning as visiting Lakeland edged St. Lucie, 2-1, on Tuesday.

Clete Thomas tripled with two outs against reliever Rafael Cova (3-1) before Mejia broke a 1-1 tie with a fly-ball single to center field.

Tigers reliever P.J. Finigan (9-2) came in with one out in the ninth and got Alhaji Turay to ground into a 5-4-3 double play to end the threat. Kevin Whelan followed with a scoreless 10th, stranding the potential tying run at second base to record his 20th save.

Lakeland starter Dallas Trahern pitched eight innings for the second consecutive outing and was charged with an unearned run on five hits with five strikeouts and one walk. In his last start, the right-hander suffered his fourth eight-inning complete-game loss of the season.

Miguel Linares led the Tigers (12-13) with three hits.

Mets starter Jose Sanchez gave up an unearned run on seven hits with four strikeouts and one walk in a seven-inning no-decision.

St. Lucie (14-10) took a 1-0 lead in the opening frame when Corey Coles doubled, advanced to third on an error by third baseman Linares and came home on Jesus Flores' groundout to first.
