Streak on line, top pick on road back

Billings' innings streak, PCL battles highlight week ahead
June 4, 2010
No runs on Billings
Game: Frisco @ Tulsa
When: Monday, June 7, 8:05 p.m. ET

May 9 was the last time somebody scored a run against Tulsa's Bruce Billings. Billings is scheduled to put his 31 1/3-scoreless-inning streak on the line against Frisco at Drillers Field on Monday. Billings is fifth in the Texas League in WHIP (1.11) and third in batting average against (.209). Frisco's Matt Lawson provides a formidable opponent for Billings as he is among the Texas League leaders in both average (third at .304) and hits (second with 62). With all four of Billings' wins coming at home this season -- as well as posting a 2.67 home ERA -- signs point towards another dominant performance.

Can Bumgarner slow down Wimberly?
Game: Sacramento @ Fresno
When: Monday, June 7, 10:05 p.m. ET

Fresno's Madison Bumgarner is considered one of the best prospects in the Minors and is certainly one of the top prospects in the San Francisco Giants organization. Bumgarner also has one of the best records (5-1) in the Pacific Coast League and is fifth in the PCL with a 2.73 ERA. The question remains, though, can Bumgarner slow down Sacramento's streaking Corey Wimberly? Wimberly has been on fire this season. He leads the PCL in stolen bases and just saw his 31-game on-base streak snapped Friday. This battle of affiliates of rival Bay Area clubs should be a good one.

Top pick Detwiler begins road back
Game: Frederick @ Potomac
When: Wednesday, June 9, 7:04 p.m. ET

It took Ross Detwiler just two months to go from 2007 MLB Draftee to a Major League mound for the Washington Nationals. The sixth overall pick, though, struggled in Class A Advanced Potomac in 2008 and then pitched poorly in 14 Major League starts in 2009. Detwiler had surgery to repair a torn hip labrum in February and makes his first step back on the road to recovery and effectiveness in Potomac on Wednesday against Frederick. He's expected to pitch once for the Nationals before moving to Double-A Harrisburg.

Battle for the Pacific League American North
Game: Nashville @ Omaha
When: Thursday, June 10, 7:05 p.m. ET

The Nashville Sounds face off against the Omaha Royals in a battle for the top spot in the Pacific League American North. The four-game series, from Thursday to Sunday, will have serious implications for who will take control of the PCL American North Division. The series features some of the hottest hitters and most promising pro prospects around. Omaha's Kai Ka'aihue is second in the league in OBP and has the league's fifth-highest slugging percentage. Alex Gordon leads Omaha in batting average and the league in OBP in his attempt to get back to Kansas City. Despite the hot hitters, runs may be hard to come by, since Nashville and Omaha have the second- and third-lowest team ERAs in the league.

FSL All-Star Game preview
Game: North vs. South
When: Saturday, June 12, 7:05 p.m. ET

The 2010 Florida State League All-Star Game will be played at Space Coast Stadium in Viera, Fla., this weekend. The rosters feature an impressive crop of young arms and ferocious hitters. The North squad is led by top Blue Jays pitching prospect Henderson Alvarez and the Tampa Yankees' Adam Warren on the mound. This 1-2 punch for the North should keep the South batters in check. Phillies prospect Cody Overbeck should provide the North with some power as he leads the league in both home runs and RBIs. For the South squad, a pair of Pirates prospects are expected to lead the South's offense. Infield prospect Jeremy Farrell, who is third in the league with 25 extra-base hits, and catcher Tony Sanchez, the fourth overall pick from the 2009 Draft, should produce some firepower for the South.
