Fightins Prospect Profile: Ben Lively

2014 Cincinnati Reds Minor League Pitcher of the Year looks to follow up career year in new organization
February 4, 2015

Over the course of the coming weeks, Fightins.com will profile the Top 10 Prospects in the Philadelphia Phillies organization according to MLB.com. Analysts project that 9 of the Top 10 players could see time in Baseballtown during the 2015 season, making Baseballtown the place to see to witness the stars of tomorrow as they make their way to the City of Brotherly Love.

After dealing Jimmy Rollins for a pair of burgeoning pitching prospects in Zach Eflin and Tom Windle, the Philadelphia Phillies set their sights on swapping outfielder and 2001 Reading alum Marlon Byrd to the Cincinnati Reds for pitcher Ben Lively.

As the Reds Minor League Player of the Year last season, Lively went 13-7 with a 3.04 ERA in 26 combined starts between Single-A Bakersfield and Double-A Pensacola. The 22-year old's standout 2014 campaign was highlighted by a selection to the California League All-Star team. His strikeout total of 171 strikeouts in 151 inning pitched was tied for second-most among all minor league pitchers last season. He was selected by the Reds in the fourth round of the 2013 draft out of the University of Central Florida.

Prior to 2014, Baseball America had Lively ranked as the no. 9 prospect in the Reds' minor leagues. He heads into 2015 ranked by MLB.com as the eighth-best prospect in the Phillies' organization. Other publications like USA Today's "BaseballHQ.com" have Lively pegged as high as no.6 in the system.

Along with Eflin and Windle, Lively could join 2014 Fightins pitchers and fellow Top 10 prospects Aaron Nola and Jesse Biddle to form one of the top rotations in the Eastern League.
