Mike Stanton Promoted to Marlins
JACKSONVILLE, FL - Suns slugger Mike Stanton has been promoted to the National League's Florida Marlins. He joins the Marlins roster and is active for their series against the Philadelphia Phillies effective Tuesday, June 8.
Stanton dominated the Southern League in 2010, beginning the season with the Suns after being called up midway through the 2009 season. After starting the season by hitting a home run in an exhibition against the Marlins on April 2, and again in his first official at-bat of the 2010 regular season, Stanton has led the league in a number of offensive categories. At the time of his promotion, Stanton led all of Minor League Baseball in home runs (21), as well as the Southern League in RBI (52), on-base percentage (.441), slugging percentage (.726), walks (44) and total bases (138). He was also fourth in the league in runs scored (41) and ninth in batting average (.311).
In 131 total games for the Suns dating back to his joining the team in June 2009, Stanton has hit 37 home runs and posted 105 RBI. He was also named Southern League player of the week on May 3, 2010.
"In all my years in Jacksonville, Mike Stanton was the closest I've seen to a home run hitting machine," said Suns President & General Manager Peter Bragan, Jr.
The Sunland, CA, native was the Marlins' 2nd-round selection in the 2007 draft. Stanton was chosen to play in the 2009 Futures Game and was rated the Marlins' #1 prospect by Baseball America and the #3 prospect overall in Minor League Baseball by MLB.com for the 2010 season.
