Chihuahuas in MLB Spring Training
The San Diego Padres are currently playing their first games after an active off-season. Minor league spring training has not started, but there is a group of potential 2015 El Paso Chihuahuas position players currently with San Diego:
Cody Decker: The 28-year-old catcher/infielder is returning to Padres major league spring training after joining San Diego's major league camp in 2014. Decker has gone 1-for-5 with an RBI so far for the Padres.
Alex Dickerson: The 24-year-old first baseman/outfielder probably would have been an inaugural Chihuahua had it not been for an ankle injury early in 2014. Dickerson has gone 1-for-5 with a double in three major league spring training games so far.
Griff Erickson: The 26-year-old catcher is in his first Padres' spring training after signing with San Diego this off-season. Erickson is 0-for-1 so far in Cactus League games.
Rocky Gale: The 27-year-old catcher is likely to return to El Paso to start the 2015 season. Gale is 0-for-1 so far in Padres spring training games.
Jake Goebbert: The 27-year-old first baseman/outfielder is a probable 2015 Chihuahua. Despite holding his own with San Diego last season, the Padres' acquisitions of major league all-star outfielders probably push Goebbert to El Paso. Goebbert is 0-for-4 so far in major league camp.
Taylor Lindsey: The 23-year-old infielder was added to San Diego's 40-man roster this winter. Lindsey is the leading candidate to be El Paso's second baseman in April. He had appeared in four Padres spring training games entering Monday and hit a home run against Seattle on March 5.
Rico Noel: The 26-year-old outfielder hit an inside-the-park home run last spring against Milwaukee and is 0-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base so far this spring.
Ramiro Pena: The 29-year-old infielder from Mexico was signed by San Diego as a minor league free agent on January 26. Pena has played parts of six years in the major leagues with the Yankees and Braves. He has hit .429 in five major league spring training games this year.
Rymer Liriano: The 23-year-old outfielder split time between Double-A San Antonio, El Paso and San Diego in 2014. While he finished last season in the major leagues, Liriano will likely start 2015 in El Paso because the Padres acquired outfielders Matt Kemp, Wil Myers and Justin Upton this winter. Liriano hit a home run against the Giants on March 7 in Scottsdale.
Brett Wallace: The 28-year-old infielder signed with the Padres as a minor league free agent on December 15. Wallace suited up for the Astros from 2010-2013. He went a combined 2-for-5 with a double in his first four spring training games of 2015.
This is an incomplete list, as many other current Cactus League Padres position players will see time in El Paso this season.
