Grizzlies' Melo out in nightcap

Veteran second baseman drives in six runs in 15-1 romp
August 2, 2006
Juan Melo drove in a season-high six runs and Matt Kinney tossed a two-hitter Tuesday night as the Fresno Grizzlies rolled to a 15-1 thumping of the Albuquerque Isotopes and a split of their doubleheader.

Melo got things started with an RBI single in the second inning, then lined a three-run double in a five-run third and added a two-run double in a six-run fourth.

The veteran second baseman has nine RBIs in his last five games.

The Grizzlies (44-67), who snapped a three-game losing steak, pounded out 18 hits and received at least one from every player. Justin Knoedler collected three hits and two RBIs, while Jason Ellison, Kevin Frandsen, Mike Cervenak and Lance Niekro each had two hits and an RBI.

Kinney (6-6), who contributed an RBI groundout, allowed only a double to Mike Kinkade in the fourth and an inside-the-park home run to Eric Reed in the sixth. The 29-year-old right-hander struck out seven and walked two en route to his first win in five starts.

Chris George (1-5) surrendered six runs on six hits and three walks in three innings for the Isotopes (54-56). Ross Wolf allowed six more runs on six hits in the fourth.

Albuquerque took the opener, 10-4.
