Moreland Named SAL Pitcher of the Week
The Norfolk, Va. native posted a 2-0 record over the week with a flawless 0.00 ERA in 15 innings pitched. Moreland allowed just five hits in his two starts. He also struck out seven and walked only two.
On June 14 against Kannapolis, he tossed a seven-inning shutout. The Intimidators managed only three hits and only two base runners advanced beyond first. In his most recent start on June 19 against Lexington, the 24-year old hurled an eight-inning gem. He allowed just two hits and an unearned run. Moreland retired 14 batters in a row between the third and seventh innings and dispatched of 17 of the final 18 batters he faced.
The non-drafted free agent in 2008 became the first Shorebirds pitcher to finish the eighth inning this season.
Moreland has won three straight starts and finished the first half of the season with a 3-2 mark and 2.78 ERA.
The former Christopher Newport University (DIII) star is the second Shorebirds pitcher to earn the award. Nate Moreau was named the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week for the week of May 24 through May 30.
The Delmarva Shorebirds finished the first half of the season with a 32-38 record. The second half opens on Thursday, June 24 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The Shorebirds welcome the Lakewood BlueClaws to the Eastern Shore for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch.
