Daytona tops attendance mark again

August 6, 2006
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- For the third consecutive year, the Daytona Cubs have broken the regular-season attendance record for Jackie Robinson Ballpark. A crowd of 3,313 fans watched the Daytona Cubs (24-17) defeat the Lakeland Tigers (19-23) on Saturday, Aug. 5, sending the season total to 127,105 people to see a game at "The Jack." This breaks the previous mark of 127,060 fans set last season.

Daytona Cubs General Manager Bill Papierniak attributes the record high to the best fans in the Florida State League. "We would like to once again thank all the fans, the City of Daytona Beach, the Robinson family and everyone else involved who has made this 2006 campaign a huge success," said Papierniak, in his third season with the Cubs and second as G.M. "Our staff can attempt to do anything to bring fans out here, but the fans still have to want to support our team. We're fortunate to have that type of fans here in Volusia County."

The Cubs are currently atop the Florida State League with a season average of 2,311 fans per game through Aug. 5. Last season, Daytona averaged 1,925 fans per game en route to breaking the previous record set in 2004. At the current pace, Daytona would end up setting the record at more than 150,000 fans -- which would also place the Cubs in the Top-10 All-Time in the FSL.

"Our front office staff has done a great job of bringing in area businesses to be a big part of the team." Papierniak said. "With our local partners, our staff and the best fans in Minor League Baseball we knew this would be a special season."

Cubs Hitting Coach Richie Zisk has been with the Cubs for 10 seasons, including each of the last three for the record-breaking attendances. "Daytona's always had a firm base of good baseball fans and I guess the word has spread about this ballpark," said Zisk, who managed the team in 2005. "As a player and now a coach, you always appreciate fans with enthusiasm -- and you can always find that here in Daytona."

Following their game on Sunday, Aug. 6, the Cubs have 10 home games at Jackie Robinson Ballpark remaining this season. Daytona is currently in first place in the FSL East, two games ahead of the second-place St. Lucie Mets.
