Big innings push Clippers past Wings

Wings lead early, but can't catch up
June 23, 2010
The Columbus Clippers capitalized on two big innings en route to a 11-2 win over the Red Wings Wednesday night at Frontier Field. Brock Peterson knocked in both runs for Rochester; the teams meet Thursday afternoon at 1:05 p.m., in the finale of the series and the homestand.

After a perfect first inning, Rochester starter Glen Perkins yielded a solo home run to Jared Goedert with one out in the second. Perkins then loaded the bases, but escaped further damage.

Columbus starter Josh Tomlin came into the game with one of the league's top 10 earned run averages at 2.81. He allowed a hit and a walk through the first two innings, but the Wings roared ahead in the third. An error, hit batter and single loaded the bases with one out for Peterson, the Wings' top hitter so far with the bases full this season. Peterson improved to 3-for-6 in bases loaded situations, ripping a two-run single that gave Rochester a 2-1 lead.

The Clippers chipped away at Perkins in the fourth, when walks and bloop hits stacked up and brought in three Columbus runs. Perkins got two outs, but Goedert's two-run single caused Perkins' departure and made the score 6-2.

Tim Lahey replaced Perkins and quickly set aside Brian Bixler for the final out of the fourth. He then followed with three quick 1-2-3 innings, with three strikeouts.

Tomlin struck out six in six innings, allowing two runs but only one earned run. The outing lowered his season ERA to 2.70.

Pat Neshek came on to work the eighth, and was knocked around by a combination of hits - solid singles, infield hits and bloop hits. The damage added up to five more runs.

Rob Delaney struck out the side in a perfect ninth inning of relief.
