Stockton takes game two of four game set
The Stockton Ports (23-21/58-55) took an early lead and held on to defeat the Visalia Oaks (27-17/60-54) 7-4 Tuesday night at Banner Island Ballpark.
Stockton jumped on the Oaks with a run in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single from leftfielder Danny Putnam to drive in Eddie Cornejo and give the Ports a 1-0 lead.
In the third inning, the Ports offense got going. Cornejo and Gregorio Petit each singled to lead off the inning and put runners on the corners. Myron Leslie smacked a RBI double off the batter's eye in straight away center field to plate Cornejo and make it 2-0 Ports. After Leslie's double, Visalia brought on reliever Brandon Mann. On the first pitch Mann threw, Putnam ripped a three run homer to right to extend Stockton's lead to 5-0. The next batter, Landon Powell, homered into the Oaks bullpen in left field on the first pitch he saw to make it 6-0.
Putnam finished the night 3-5 with a homerun, double, 4 RBI and 1 run scored.
Visalia got on the board with a run in the top of the fourth. Chris Nowak led off with a double off the wall in center field. With one out and Nowak at third, designated hitter Josh Arhart doubled into the gap in right center field to bring home Nowak and make the score 6-1 Ports.
Stockton answered with an insurance run in the fifth when Luis Perez doubled to drive in Nick Blasi and extend the lead to 7-1.
The Oaks rallied for three runs in the seventh. Hunter Vick and David Cardona led off with back to back singles and Fernando Perez reached on an error by the shortstop Petit with Vick scoring on the play. With two outs and Cardona at third, Chris Nowak walked and stole second base. John Jaso then smoked a single through the right side to plate Cardona and Nowak and make it a 7-4 game, but that was as close as Visalia would get.
The Oaks and Ports continue this four game series with game three Wednesday at 7:05 PM. Fans can listen live on AM 1270 or online at www.oaksbaseball.com. Visalia returns home on Friday for a three game series against the Modesto Nuts with first pitch Friday night at 7:05 PM.
