Patchett to DL, Smith to Ark, Mendoza Returns, Perez Joins SL

The Salt Lake Bees announced today that the club has placed infielder Gary Patchett on the Disabled List with a right groin strain and reassigned left-handed pitcher Will Smith to Double-A Arkasnas. The Bees also promoted right-handed pitcher Tommy Mendoza to Triple-A Salt Lake from Arkansas and infielder Darwin Perez from Single-A Rancho Cucamonga.

Patchett, 31, has appeared in 31 games for the Bees in 2010, hitting .255 with four doubles, one home run and 25 RBI. In 2009, he appeared in 91 games for the Bees, hitting .244 with nine doubles and 26 RBI. The Torrance, Calif. native signed with the Angels as a free agent prior to the 2007 season.

Smith, 20, has appeared in nine games (all starts) for the Bees in 2010, owning a 2-4 record with a 5.60 ERA and 40 strikeouts. In six games (all starts) for Single-A Rancho Cucamonga this season, he owns a 2-2 record with a 4.58 ERA and 31 strikeouts. The Newnan, Ga. native was originally selected by the Angels in the seventh round of the 2008 draft.

Mendoza, 22, has appeared in four games (all starts) for the Travelers in 2010, owning a 1-1 record with a 3.44 ERA. In three games (all starts) for the Bees this season, he owns a 0-1 record with a 5.51 ERA. The Hialeah, Fla. native was originally selected by the Angels in the fifth round of the 2005 draft.

Perez, 20, has appeared in 20 games for the Quakes in 2010, hitting .269 with four doubles, seven triples, two home runs, 16 RBI and nine stolen bases. In 2009, he appeared in 106 games for Single-A Cedar Rapids, hitting .261 with 14 doubles, 42 RBI and 11 stolen bases. The Maracay, Venezuela native signed with the Angels as a free agent in 2005.
