Herrera's First Big-League Hit a Walk-off Winner

HIGHLIGHT OF THE DAY: ­

Odubel Herrera ('11, 2B/ Philadelphia) got his first major league hit - a walk-off RBI double in the tenth - to send the Phillies to a 3-2 win over Washington.

 

BIRTHDAYS:

Brady Borner ('01, P) turns 36. The native of Chaska, MN was the Pirates 31st round draft pick in 2001 out of Wayne St. (NE) College. Borner went 5-1 with a 2.43 ERA in nine games (eight starts) - three of those complete games with one shutout. In 59.1 innings, he struck out 58 and walked 12. His 0.93 WHIP is the fifth best in a single season among pitchers with 50 + innings. Borner stayed in the Pirates chain his entire career, pitching the final four seasons (2003-2006) at AA Altoona.

DJ Carrasco ('00, P) turns 38. The native of Hayward, CA signed with the Pirates as a free agent in 1999 after his release from the Pirates. Carrasco went 5-4 with six saves and a 1.34 ERA in 27 relief outings. He was a "Rule 5" pick of the Kansas City Royals in 2002 and he made his debut with the team on 4/2/03 and stayed with the team through 2005. Carrasco went on to pitch in the majors with the White Sox (2008-2009), Pirates (2010), Diamondbacks (2010) and Mets (2011-2012).

Jose Bautista ('02, 3B/ Toronto) went 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, four runs scored and two RBI to lead the Blue Jays to a 12-5 win.

 

BIRTHDAYS:

Carlos De Los Santos ('01-'03, P) turns 37. The native of Azua, D.R. signed with the Pirates as international free agent in 1998. He went 9-9 in 74 games (8 starts) with a 3.43 ERA. His 13 saves in 2003 are the tenth most in a Crawdads single season. He is fourth overall in games pitched and eighth overall in saves (17). De Los Santos wrapped up his career in 2005 in the Atlantic League at Camden and Newark.

Archie Vazquez ('94, P) turns 43. The native of Hialeah, FL signed with the White Sox as a free agent in 1994 after his release from the Padres. Vazquez went 7-3 in 50 relief appearances with 28 saves and a 1.21 ERA. He holds the club's record in saves, ERA among pitchers with 50 or more innings, and is second in WHIP (0.88). Vazquez played out his career with the White Sox through 1996 at AA Birmingham.

HIGHLIGHT OF THE DAY: ­

Nick Martinez ('12, P/ Texas) threw four-hit ball over seven innings and struck out five (two walks) to pace the Rangers to a 10-1 win over Oakland.

 

BIRTHDAYS:

Brian Downs ('96-'98, C) turns 40. The native of Chino, CA was the 13th round pick of the White Sox in 1995 out of Riverside (CA) Community College. Downs batted .244 in 200 games with 29 doubles, 16 homers and 74 RBI. His 92 assists as a catcher in 1996 are the second most in a single season for the Crawdads. Overall at the position, he is second in assists and total chances. Downs stayed with the White Sox through 1999, making it as far as AA Birmingham. From then, he played with independent leagues at Elmira (Northern) in 1999-2000 and Long Beach (Western) in 2001.

Greg Martin ('05, P) turns 35. The native of Lake Ariel, PA signed with the Pirates as a free agent in 2004 after his release from the Montreal Expos organization. Martin pitched in two games and allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and struck out three over three innings. He stayed with the Pirates through 2006 at AA Altoona before his release.

Dan Olson ('96-'97, OF) turns 40. The native of Cape May, NJ was the sixth round selection of the White Sox in 1996 out of Indiana St. University. Olson batted .273 in 155 games with 39 doubles, five triples, 11 homers and 66 RBI. His 31 doubles in 1997 are tied for the tenth most for the club in a single-season. Olson played for the White Sox his entire career through 1999, making it to AA Birmingham.

Jovanny Sosa ('99-00, OF) turns 36. The native of Santo Domingo, D.R. signed with the Pirates as an international free agent in 1997. He batted .229 in 225 games over two full seasons with 32 doubles, two triples, 40 homers and 118 RBI. Sosa holds the overall club record in homers, is second in strikeouts (280) and is fifth in RBI and total bases (347). After his release following the 2000 season, Sosa played as season in 2001 with the Orioles chain at low-A Delmarva and high-A Frederick. He capped his career in 2002 with the Expos at low-A Clinton.

HIGHLIGHT OF THE DAY: ­

Chad Bradford ('96, P/ pitching coach Hinds CC) and his charges at Hinds (MS) Community College continue to roll through the regular season. On Wednesday, the NJCAA's top-ranked Division II program blasted Co-Lin CC in a doubleheader and improved to 27-2 on the year.

 

BIRTHDAYS:                                                                                     

Dustin Craig ('05-'07, P) turns 33. The native of San Antonio, TX was the 23rd round pick of the Pirates in 2004 out of Sam Houston State. Craig went 8-10 in 56 games (13 starts) with three saves and a 4.22 ERA. He struck out 121 and walked 70 over 138.2 innings. Craig made it as far as high-A Lynchburg before his release.

Ben Henry ('11, P) turns 26. The native of Loris, SC was the 30th round pick of the Rangers in 2007 out of Loris High School. Henry went 6-3 in 24 games (five starts) with one save and a 2.38 ERA. He struck out 67 and walked 31 over 64.1 innings. Henry pitched for high-A Myrtle Beach in 2012 and then at the independent American Association at Lincoln in 2013 before undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Ryan O'Malley ('13, pitching coach) turns 35. The native of Springfield, IL pitched in the majors with the Cubs and also in the minor leagues with the White Sox through 2008. He joined the Rangers as a pitching coach in 2010 and came to Hickory in 2013. O'Malley is in his second season as the pitching coach at AZL Angels.

BIRTHDAYS:

Juan Bazan ('00, P) turns 37. The native of Chitre, Panama was an international signee of the Pirates in 1996. He went 3-4 with a save and a 1.74 ERA in 15 relief outings and then was released.

Shannon Cabell ('01, P) turns 36. The native of Huntington, WV was the 22nd round pick of the Pirates in 2000 out of West Virginia St. Cabell went 1-9 with two saves and a 3.45 ERA in 42 games out of the bullpen. He was released after the season.

Danny Sandoval ('98, SS) turns 36. The native of Lara, Venezuela signed with the White Sox as an international free agent in 1996. Sandoval batted .230 in 126 games with 12 doubles, two triples and 30 RBI. He set the club's single-season record for games played at shortstop and in assists at the position. Sandoval stayed with the Sox through 2003 before joining the Rockies at AA Tulsa in 2004. He moved on to the Phillies in 2005 and made his big league debut with Philadelphia on 7/17/05 and played there for parts of two seasons. He then went on to the Indians and Blue Jays systems in 2008, back to the Rockies in 2009, then to Italy in 2010, and Maui in 2012.
