April 6, 2015

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Tampa Bay Rays' top two prospects, Justin O'Conner and Daniel Robertson, highlight the Montgomery Biscuits 2015 Opening Day Roster as announced by the Rays Monday morning.

Ranked by MLB.com as the Rays' top prospect, O'Conner, 23, made it to the Biscuits in August of 2014. He ripped a home run and threw out a would-be base-stealer in his AA-debut behind the plate. He played 21 games with the Biscuits after hitting .282 with ten home runs and 44 RBI in 80 games with High-A Charlotte. For the first time in his career, O'Conner went to Major League camp during the Spring.

Robertson, 21, will play his first season in the Rays system as the organizations number two prospect. The 21-year old shortstop was the main piece in the trade that sent Ben Zobrist to the Oakland Athletics. Robertson led the A's system with 170 hits in 2014 while hitting .310 with 37 doubles and 15 home runs for High-A Stockton.

Joining Robertson on the infield will be three returners and two players who will make their Double-A debuts. Former first-round pick, 3B Richie Shaffer will return to the Biscuits after hitting a career-high 19 home runs last year. 1B Cameron will also return to Montgomery along with the 2014 Florida State League batting champion Leonardo Reginatto. The two new comers will be Patrick Leonard - the 2014 Stone Crabs' Organizational MVP - and Tommy Coyle.

In the outfield will be former-first round picks Kes Carter and Tyler Goeddel along with Johnny Field Jr. and Boog Powell. Carter hit .241 with a .339 on-base percentage last year after being promoted to the Biscuits in June. Jake DePew will round out the positional players as the backup catcher.

The pitching staff is made up of three returners and nine newcomers. RHs Jared Mortensen, Matt Lollis and Parker Markel are returning to the Biscuits for their second seasons. Other RH pitchers include Zach Cooper, Bradin Hagins, Reinaldo Lopez, Mikey O'Brien, Austin Pruitt, Colton Reavis, Mark Sappington, Jhan Marinez and Jaime Schultz. The lone-left-hander is Jordan Harrison.

LHP Grayson Garvin, SS Jake Hager and LHP Robert Zarate are on the Biscuits disabled list.

The Biscuits home opener is Thursday, April 9 against the Chattanooga Lookouts. It will be a Thirsty Thursday along with All New MAX Fireworks capping the evening.
