Brewers Announce Shuckers' Preliminary Opening Day Roster

Biloxi's inaugural roster features 10 of Milwaukee's top-30 prospects, according to Baseball America

Biloxi, MS - In concordance with the Milwaukee Brewers, the Biloxi Shuckers Baseball Club is excited to announce its preliminary Opening Day roster for the 2015 Southern League season. The Biloxi Shuckers open the season on Thursday at Pensacola with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 PM. The preliminary of 27 players includes 14 pitchers, three catchers, six infielders and four outfielders. The roster will be trimmed to 25 by Thursday.

The inaugural roster will take the field featuring 10 of Milwaukee's top-30 prospects, according to Baseball America, including the top two prospects, 21-year-old outfielder Tyrone Taylor (1), and 20-year-old infielder Orlando Arcia (2). Right-handed starting pitcher Tyler Wagner (9), infielder Yadiel Rivera (13), right-handed pitcher Jorge Lopez (15), outfielder Kyle Wren (19), left-handed starting pitcher Hobbs Johnson (23), right-handed starting pitcher Brooks Hall (25), right-handed reliever Mike Strong (29) and right-handed reliever Damien Magnifico (30) round out the top-30 prospects on the roster.

According to MLB.com's prospect pipeline rankings, Arcia is tabbed as the top Brewers prospect and Taylor is second. Arcia is ranked as the No. 89 overall prospect in baseball, according to MLB.com.

The roster includes three members of Milwaukee's 40-man roster in Hall, Strong and Rivera. Two on the roster enter the 2015 season with Major League experience. Reliever Jaye Chapman made his Major League debut on September 4, 2012 at Washington as a member of the Chicago Cubs and went 0-1 with a 3.75 ERA in 14 relief outings. Infielder Taylor Green made his Major League debut for the Brewers on August 31, 2011 and played in 20 games, posting a .270 batting average with an RBI. In 2012, Green appeared in 58 games for the Brew Crew accumulating seven doubles, three home runs and 14 RBI's over 58 games. Overall, Green made 30 starts (14 games at first base, 11 games at third base, 4 games at second base, 1 game at DH) and was on the 2011 postseason roster for Milwaukee, appearing off the bench in both the NLDS (1 game) and NLCS (2 games).

The roster includes 16 players with Double-A experience including 2014 mid-season and post-season Southern League All-Star Nick Ramirez. The 25-year-old Cal State Fullerton product led the Southern League in RBI's (82) and ranked among the leaders in home runs (T-3rd, 19). He was named Southern League Player of the Week for April 28-May 4.

The average opening-day age for the Shuckers is 24.9 years-old with the oldest being 31-year-old catcher Tyler LaTorre and youngest, Arcia. There are four countries represented on the roster which includes the United States, Canada, Venezuela and Dominican Republic. Two Shuckers reside in the US territory of Puerto Rico. Of the roster, 20 were acquired via the MLB amateur draft, three via minor league free agency and two were acquired through non-drafted free agency and two by trade.

Biloxi returns 13 members of the 2014 Huntsville Stars that posted a 77-63 record return. The club qualified for the postseason after winning the Southern League North Division first-half title, going 46-24. Those include pitchers Jacob Barnes, Hall, Eric Marzec, Tanner Poppe, Austin Ross, Strong and Brent Suter. Returning position players include Josh Fellhauer, Green, Ramirez, Rivera, Taylor and Adam Weisenburger. The Stars lost in the Southern League semifinals, dropping a best-of-five series to the Chattanooga Lookouts (Dodgers affiliate), three games to two.
