April 7, 2015

San Antonio - The San Diego Padres have announced the 2015 Opening Night roster for their Double-A affiliate, the San Antonio Missions.

The Missions will open their 2015 season with two of San Diego's top three prospects (according to MLB.com) in outfielder Hunter Renfroe (#1) and shortstop Trea Turner (#3), in addition to five others ranked in the organization's top 30: RHP Tayron Guerrero (#13), OF Travis Jankowski (#17), RHP Justin Hancock (#19), RHP Elliot Morris (#25) and OF Yeison Asencio (#28).

Renfroe, San Diego's 1st round selection (13th overall) in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft out of Mississippi State University, hit .267 (134-for-502) with 33 doubles, 21 homers and 75 RBI in 129 games last season between High-A Lake Elsinore and San Antonio. The 23-year old enters 2015 as the 49th ranked prospect in all of MiLB (according to MLB.com).

Turner, who had a terrific career at North Carolina State University, was the Padres' 1st round selection (also 13th overall) in last June's Draft. Following the draft, the Boynton Beach, FL native hit .323 (90-for-279) with five homers, 24 RBI and 45 runs scored in 69 games between Short-Season Eugene and Class A Fort Wayne.

Guerrero went 6-1 with a 1.46 ERA and four saves in 39 games last season between Fort Wayne and Lake Elsinore. The 24-year-old hurler fanned 56 batters, while allowing just 32 hits and 20 walks over 49.1 innings.

Managing the Missions in 2015 will be Jamie Quirk, who enters his second season in the Padres' organization and his 43rd in professional baseball. Last season, Quirk, 60, was the manager at Lake Elsinore, where he guided the Storm to a 75-65 record and a playoff berth.

Returning to the Missions' staff is pitching coach, Jimmy Jones. The Dallas, TX native enters his seventh season in the Padres' organization and his fifth straight with San Antonio. Under Jones' tutelage in 2014, Mission pitching set a Texas League record with 1,156 strikeouts (breaking the old record held by the 2008 Missions). Also returning to the staff is trainer Dan Turner and strength coach Eric Wood.

Morgan Burkhart joins the San Antonio staff in 2015 as hitting coach after spending the last two seasons in the same capacity for Fort Wayne.

San Antonio will begin their 2015 campaign on Thursday, April 9 (7:05 PM) at ONEOK Field in Tulsa, OK when they take on the Tulsa Drillers (Los Angeles Dodgers AA). After the six-game road trip, which also includes a stop in Springfield, the Missions will return to the Alamo City for their home opener on Thursday, April 16 (7:05 PM) against Tulsa.
