Lerew curbs Mud Hens

August 13, 2006
Anthony Lerew tossed seven strong innings as Richmond cruised to a 6-1 victory over visiting Toledo on Sunday.

Lerew (2-4) gave up one run on five hits, struck out nine and walked one over seven innings. The 23-year-old right-hander blanked the Mud Hens (63-59) until Josh Phelps homered leading off the seventh.

Scheduled starter Lance Cormier was scratched due to a possible start for Atlanta on Tuesday.

Cesar Crespo reached on a fielder's choice in the second, plating Brayan Pena, to give the Braves (48-72) a 1-0 lead. Michael Ryan hit an RBI single and Wes Timmons scored on a wild pitch by starter Jordan Tata (8-6) to provide the insurance runs in the sixth.

Carlos Mendez hit a two-run single in the seventh and Jonathan Schuerholz added a sacrifice fly in the eighth for Richmond.

Phelps, who went 3-for-4, homered in his second straight game and leads Toledo with 22 roundtrippers. -- Marissa Rega/MLB.com
