River Cats nip Sky Sox

Serrano has strong outing for Sacramento
June 19, 2005
Jimmy Serrano pitched seven shutout innings and the River Cats held on for a 5-3 victory over the Sky Sox on Saturday night.

Serrano (7-3) yielded just three hits -- all singles -- and a walk with 10 strikeouts. Reliever Victor Moreno came on with one out in the eighth inning and retired the five batters he faced to bail out the River Cats and earn his first save.

The River Cats carried a 5-0 lead into the eighth, but Mike Saipe allowed three of four hitters to reach base, including one on an error by shortstop Mike Rouse. Saipe was charged with three runs -- two earned --. Mario Ramos relieved Saipe, but gave up back-to-back singles before Moreno came in to close the door.

Sacramento widened its lead with two runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Matt Watson and Shawn Garrett both scored on an error by Sky Sox first baseman Brian Buchanan in the sixth to make it 3-0. Watson brought in a run with a sacrifice fly and Garrett singled home a run in the seventh.

Charles Thomas, who went 3-for-5, got Sacramento on the board in the first inning, leading off with a double and eventually scoring on a groundout by Watson. -- Tim Leonard/MLB.com
