Drillers' Seager singles way to perfect night
Corey Seager is a man of many tools, and so far this season, it's his ability to hit for average that he's really showcased.
The Dodgers' top prospect continued to boost his average with a 4-for-4 night, but it was not enough as Double-A Tulsa fell to Corpus Christi, 6-3, on Monday at ONEOK Field.
Seager singled in the first inning, then added another base knock and scored the Drillers' first run of the game on a double by Daniel Mayora in the third. The designated hitter reached on an infield single to third baseman Colin Moran -- the Astros' sixth-ranked prospect -- in the fifth.
MLB.com's No. 7 overall prospect collected his fourth base knock in the eighth for his fourth multi-hit game in five contests this season. The four-hit night tied a career mark, which he accomplished five times last season with Class A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga.
With the Quakes, Seager batted 352 with 18 homers and 70 RBIs en route to being crowned the California League Most Valuable Player. The 20-year-old finished the season with Double-A Chattanooga, where his .354 average over 38 games sealed Dodgers' Minor League Player of the Year kudos -- an honor he shared with the club's third-ranked prospect, Joc Pederson.
A model of consistency, Seager has hit above .300 for every team he has been on since Los Angeles took him in the first round of the 2012 Draft -- aside from his first 27-game stint with Rancho Cucamonga in 2013.
The left-handed hitter continued to impress with his bat this spring when he went 6-for-18 with four RBIs and seven walks over 14 games at big league camp. Although the Dodgers changed Double-A affiliates, the new league hasn't seemed to faze the shortstop.
Seager has 11 hits, four RBIs and four runs in his first five games this season in the Texas League and hasn't showed any sign of slowing down on his way to a possible callup to Chavez Ravine.
Reliever Chin-hui Tsao (0-1) allowed two runs on three walks while striking out two across 1 2/3 innings.
Corpus Christi starter Mike Hauschild (1-0) held Tulsa to three runs on seven hits while striking out eight over five frames for the win.
