Game Notes, July 2 - CC at Tulsa
Corpus Christi (0-7, 36-41) @ Tulsa (4-2, 33-42)
A sell-out crowd is expected for tonight's middle game in this series at Tulsa. They could be witnessing Hooks' franchise history.
The Drillers clubbed three home runs in support of starter Christian Friedrich, who fanned a season-high nine batters over six innings on the way to a 6-2 triumph over the Hooks and his first win of the year. Jason Van Kooten (3-run HR), Charlie Blackmon (solo) and Bronson Sardinha (PH 2-run HR) socked the long balls for the Drillers, who beat the Hooks for the first time at home this season. Corpus Christi's runs came courtesy of Jhon Florentino, who smacked solo homers in the second and fourth innings.
The Hooks have tied their franchise record for consecutive losses at eight. It's just the second time in club history that the team has lost eight in a row.
Tonight's Matchup:
RHP Jeremy Johnson (3-7, 3.75) vs. RHP Greg Reynolds (1-2, 10.38)
Johnson, signed by the Astros as a free agent in December of 2008, makes his 13th start this season and his first against the Drillers. Last Saturday at home against Frisco, Johnson allowed three runs on six hits over 5.1 innings in a 3-2 loss. Despite a 2-4 record over his last six starts, Johnson has posted a 3.38 ERA in that stretch. Originally selected by Detroit in the 11th round of the 2000 draft out of high school in North Carolina, Johnson spent all of last season with Round Rock, starting in 13 of his 21 appearances and posting a 5-8 record with a 3.51 ERA. Johnson is 0-for-2 as a hitter with 1 walk.
- Approaching 1,000 career innings (972.2 IP)
- Began the '09 season in the pen, going 2-1 with 2 saves and a 2.18 ERA in 8 appearances
- As a starter last year, was 3-7 with a 3.87 ERA
Reynolds, selected by the Rockies in the first round (2nd overall pick) of the 2006 draft out of Stanford, makes his sixth start this season for Tulsa. Last Thursday at Northwest Arkansas, Reynolds collected his first win, limiting the Naturals to three runs, two earned, over five innings. The number that stands out for this once bright star in the Colorado system is the fact that opponents are batting .395 against Reynolds (30 hits in 17.1 IP). Injuries have hampered his career, and last year he made only one start for AAA Colorado Springs. At Spring Training with the Rockies this season, Reynolds took a line drive off his right elbow, forcing yet another setback. His first action this year came in a May 8 rehab start for Modesto in the California League.
- Went 1-0 with a 0.82 ERA in 2 rehab starts for Modesto
- Made two rehab starts for the Drillers (May 18 and June 11) before being assigned to the Tulsa roster
- Made 14 appearances and 13 starts for the Rockies in 2008, going 2-8 with an 8.13 ERA
Check that scorecard
More movement today on the Corpus Christi roster. Catcher Lou Santangelo has received the call to AAA Round Rock. Taking Santangelo's spot on the Hooks' roster is catcher John Curtis, who joins the Hooks from Lancaster of the California League.
In 19 games this season with the JetHawks, Curtis was batting .254-0-5 with 3 doubles. Selected by the White Sox in the 14th round of the 2007 draft out of Cal State Fullerton, Curtis spent four seasons in the Chicago system, where in 186 games he batted .220-5-50 with 27 doubles and 2 triples in 601 at-bats.
HR drought over
Florentino's two homers last night ended Corpus Christi's longest home run drought of the season at eight games. Prior to last night, the last time the Hooks "went yard" was June 20 at home against Frisco.
The clutch hit?
It just isn't there right now for the club. Last night, the Hooks went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position, with three strikeouts and a double-play ground ball. During the eight-game losing streak, the Hooks are batting .140 (8-57) with runners in scoring position.
Abreu doing well
Reliever Erick Abreu was impressive last night, retiring all six batters he faced, striking out the last five. In four appearances, including one spot start, since his return from AAA Round Rock, Abreu has not allowed a run over 11.1 innings. In that time, he has surrendered just three hits and two walks while striking out 12. He has reduced his Texas League ERA from 7.50 to 4.60.
