Intimidators' Guerrero fans career-high 11

Jordan Guerrero said his arm is feeling good. South Atlantic League hitters can attest to that.

The White Sox No. 28 prospect recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts and allowed two hits over six innings Wednesday as Class A Kannapolis defeated Delmarva, 8-0, in the second game of a doubleheader.

Both hits off Guerrero (1-0) were singles, with neither runner reaching second base. The 20-year-old left-hander walked one and threw 54 of 77 pitches for strikes.

Guerrero smashed his previous career best of six strikeouts, established most recently in his season debut on April 9 at Lakewood. He picked up No. 7 with two outs in the fourth and had a string of five consecutive punchouts snapped when he walked Elier Levya with one out in the fifth.

"Everything was great," Guerrero said. "Great game called by [catcher] Brett Austin tonight. He was on tonight, knowing what to call, watching the batters. My changeup was on tonight and my fastball was, too."

An inning short of his first career complete game, Guerrero hoped to return for the seventh. But he has a pitch limit to 85 to start the season and said he understood the decision to end his evening.

"Pitches were a little high, second outing, long season," the California native said. "Can't go wrong with that kind of game where the whole team played good, offense hitting the ball, defense making some plays."

Guerrero is two years removed from missing most of the 2013 season with a shoulder injury. It forced the 2012 15th-round pick to the bullpen for most of last season, with Guerrero making 18 relief appearances and nine starts, to help rebuild his endurance.

"I'm feeling pretty good," he said. "My arm feels good. [I'm] just going out there and taking it day by day and pitch by pitch."

Guerrero has yet to allow a run in 12 innings this season and has yielded only yielded four hits. He's struck out 17 while issuing only two walks.

Austin also contributed at the plate, going 3-for-4 with his league-leading third triple, two RBIs and two runs scored for the Intimidators. Toby Thomas homered and drove in four runs.

Shorebirds starter Stefan Crichton (0-1) took the loss after allowing three runs -- one earned -- on five hits over three innings. He not struck out three and did not walk a batter.
