Indians drop 1-0 heartbreaker to Norfolk

Indianapolis RHP Ryan Vogelsong tosses a one-hitter but loses
August 15, 2006
INDIANAPOLIS -- Third baseman Chris Basak belted a solo homer in the top of the fifth to give Norfolk a 1-0 win over Indianapolis Tuesday night at Victory Field.

The Tides improve 47-76 on the season, while the Indians fall to 66-57 overall. Indianapolis continues to lead the International League's West Division by 1.5 games over both Louisville and Toledo.

Basak's seventh long ball of the campaign -- which cleared the left-field wall by 10 feet -- was the only scoring for either team in the two-hour affair.

Indianapolis RHP Ryan Vogelsong (8.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 SO), who faced just one over the minimum (24), fell to 2-5 with the loss in his best Triple-A outing of the 2006.

Norfolk RHP Brian Bannister (8.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 SO), who dealt with just three over the minimum (24), improved to 1-3 with the win. RHP Heath Bell (1.0 IP, 2 H, 2 SO) yielded two runners in the ninth, but eventually closed the door for his team-leading 11th save of the season.

2B Craig Stansberry and LF Mike Edwards recorded two hits apiece for the Indians, who collected five base knocks in the contest. Edwards extended his hitting streak to a season-best 12 games with a lead-off single in the seventh.

The two clubs wrap up their brief two-game series Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. LHP Shane Youman is slated to start for Indianapolis, while LHP Evan MacLane is expected to get nod for Norfolk.

The game will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com as Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley have the call. Wednesday's pre-game show begins at 1:40 p.m.
