Davis, Phillips lead JetHawks to third win in a row
ADELANTO, Calif. - Another high-scoring affair saw the JetHawks score early and often as they slugged their way to an 11-4 win over the High Desert Mavericks on Saturday night at Heritage Field.
A one-out double by Danry Vasquez in the top of the first inning sparked an early JetHawks (6-4) lead against Mavericks (4-6) starter David Ledbetter (0-2). J.D. Davis stretched his hitting streak to seven games on an RBI single, followed by a run-scoring single by Brett Phillips and a Jack Mayfield RBI double.
With a runner on third in the bottom of the first, Lancaster starter Adrian Houser uncorked a wild pitch to give the Mavericks their first run, making the score 3-1.
The JetHawks added a run in the top of the second on an RBI double by Davis, and rallied for five more runs in the third inning, getting five singles, a double and a sacrifice fly to knock Ledbetter from the game. Righty reliever Ryan Ledbetter would limit Lancaster to one run, a Phillips solo homer in the fourth, over his 1 2-3 innings of work.
Houser allowed High Desert an additional run in each of his remaining three innings on RBI singles by Joe Jackson, Zach Cone and Lewis Brinson in the second, third and fourth innings respectively.
Making his second appearance of the season, Ambiorix De Leon (1-0) relieved Houser and battled control problems, allowing five walks over two innings pitched. After walking the first two batters of the seventh, he yielded to Chris Cotton, who struck out the side and stranded both runners.
After entering to record the final out of the seventh, Cody Ege gave up the final Lancaster run in the top of the eighth on a Phillips RBI single, stretching the JetHawks' lead to 11-4.
Lancaster secured the win as Cotton held the Mavericks scoreless in the eighth and ninth innings, earning the save.
The JetHawks will close their series against the Mavericks Sunday at Heritage Field in Adelanto. Blaine Sims (0-1, 9.00) will start for the Lancaster, and High Desert will send Cole Wiper (0-0, 2.08) to the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
