Mobile Maintains Streak With 4-3 Win Over Biscuits

BayBears improve to 7-6, stay above .500
April 23, 2015

Montgomery, Ala - The Mobile BayBears held off the Montgomery Biscuits for a 4-3 win Wednesday night at Riverwalk Stadium. The BayBears fell down early but pulled ahead after a three run third inning and a clutch performance out of the bullpen to give Mobile the victory.

With Wednesday's win the BayBears are now 7-6, one game above .500 and keep their streak of games at or above .500 alive. Mobile has maintained a record of .500 or better for 236 straight games. The last time Mobile was below .500 was May 30, 2013 when the team was 26-27.

Richie Shaffer gave the Biscuits an early lead with a solo home run off of BayBears starting RHP Braden Shipley in the first inning. The long ball would be the only run surrender by Shipley the rest of the night.

The BayBears tied the game and took the lead in the top half of the third inning. Mitch Haniger led off the frame with a triple and Mark Thomas followed with a walk to put runners at first and third with no outs. Ryan Gebhardt drove in Haniger to tie the game at 1-1 in the next at bat with an RBI single to right. Socrates Brito then drove in both Thomas and Gebhardt with a two-run double giving Mobile a 3-1 advantage at the end of the third inning.

After Thomas tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the top of the fourth inning to give Mobile a 4-1 lead, the Biscuits battled back for two runs in the bottom half of the inning. With Montgomery down 4-2, batting with the bases loaded and none out, RHP Jimmy Sherfy entered the game for the BayBears. Sherfy got the first batter he faced to pop up to right and one run did score from third with a sacrifice fly but Sherfy struck out the next two batters to strand the tying run at third and preserve the BayBears 4-3 lead. After the righty pitched a scoreless eighth inning, RHP Enrique Burgos retired the side in the ninth inning to record his fourth save of the year and seal the BayBears 4-3 victory.

Shipley (2-0) was credited with the win after allowing just the one run on four hits, walking three and striking out six in five full innings on the mound. The loss went to Biscuits starting RHP Jared Mortensen (1-1). The BayBears got to Mortensen for three runs, all earned on five hits while he walked two and struck out seven in six innings.

Mobile will look to tie the series up at two games apiece when the BayBears and Biscuits square off Thursday night with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM CT. RHP Yoan Lopez (0-2, 3.97) will take the mound for Mobile against Montgomery RHP Reinaldo Lopez (0-0, 4.66).

The BayBears will return home to Mobile for the next homestand at Hank Aaron Stadium beginning on Saturday, April 25-April 29 against the Mississippi Braves.
