PawSox slam Red Barons

August 19, 2006
Dustin Pedroia's grand slam capped a seven-run fourth inning as Pawtucket cruised to a 9-5 victory over visiting Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday.

After Carlos Pena hit an RBI double and scored with Corky Miller on an error by shortstop Angel Chavez, Pedroia cranked his fifth blast over the left-field wall to give the Red Sox (62-65) an 8-2 cushion.

Tyler Minges went 2-for-3 with a leadoff shot in the third, his second homer in three games. Alejandro Machado and Willie Harris, who went 3-for-3, plated a run apiece for the PawSox, who completed a sweep of the three-game series.

Reliever Craig Breslow (6-1) got the win after giving up two hits and a walk over two scoreless innings. He struck out two.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starter Brian Mazone (11-3) surrendered eight runs -- three earned -- on seven hits over 3 2/3 frames. The left-hander, who leads the International League with a 2.22 ERA, struck out three and walked two.

Carlos Ruiz slugged a two-run homer in the fourth and Chavez delivered an RBI double in a two-run fifth for the Red Barons (72-54). Josh Kroeger's RBI single in the ninth capped the scoring. --Marissa Rega/MLB.com
