Biscuits Claim Game One in Thumping over BayBears
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Plenty of offense at Riverwalk Stadium on Wednesday night as the Montgomery Biscuits blasted three home runs en route to a 10-6 over the BayBears in the first of their four-game series.
Starter Alex Cobb (4-2) suffered his poorest outing of the season for the Biscuits (46-38, 8-8) as the BayBears (45-39, 9-7) took to him early with Kory Casto drilling a one-out, two-run homer in the first inning over the fence in right-center.
Montgomery came right back after Pat McAnaney (3-8) in the bottom of the first as they tagged him for a five-spot. After Emeel Salem was hit by a pitch, Nevin Ashley reached on a Casto error to set up Henry Wrigley. Wrigley responded with a three-run jack to put the Biscuits on top. Another hit batsman put a man on in front of Rashad Eldridge, who poked a two-run tater. McAnaney has now coughed up 20 first-inning runs this season.
The BayBears drew closer against Cobb in the third inning as Collin Cowgill and Casto each walked with one away. A grounder moved both men up a bag while Cyle Hankerd's single to left scored the pair, pulling the BayBears within one.
In the home half of the frame, the Biscuits continued to play keep away with Chris De La Cruz's two-run triple giving the local nine a three-run lead. The BayBears cut it closer again in the sixth on a Jake Elmore RBI double. A wild pitch from Ryan Reid allowed Elmore to score, and it was 7-6 Montgomery.
In the bottom of the sixth, Wrigley lifted an 0-2 pitch off his ankles for his second home run of the night off Bryan Shaw. Daniel Stange gave up a pair in the seventh on three singles while the Biscuit bullpen was strong. Reid and Matthew Gorgen combined for eight strikeouts in the final 3.2 innings.
The BayBears are in Montgomery on Thursday night for game two of their four-game set with the Biscuits at 7:05.
