Storm Dump Quakes for Second Straight Night
Lake Elsinore, CA - A slow start once again spelled trouble for Rancho Cucamonga, falling 5-1 at Lake Elsinore on Saturday night.
For the second straight night, the Quakes (10-7) fell behind in the first inning at The Diamond. The Storm (7-10) took advantage of a leadoff walk to Jose Rondon from right-hander Johnathan Richy (2-1). After a sacrifice bunt, Fernando Perez singled to center field, bringing Rondon home. Gabriel Quintana doubled, placing runners at second and third. Robert Kral walked to load the bases. Kyle Gaedele singled up the middle to drive in a run. Marcus Davis was hit by a Richy pitch to force in a run. Yale Rosen capped the rally with a single to right, scoring two to give Lake Elsinore an early 5-0 lead.
Rancho Cucamonga received its only run in the top of the second against Storm starter Zech Lemond. Joey Curletta and Tyler Ogle walked to open the inning. Yadir Drake's single to right plated Curletta, trimming the deficit to 5-1. The Cuban-born Drake finished the game with a 2-for-4 performance and is now batting .400 (8-for-20) in a Quakes' uniform.
Lemond exited after four innings, but four Lake Elsinore relievers combined to shut down the visitors during the last five innings. Kyle Lloyd (1-0) tossed two scoreless frames to earn the win out of the bullpen. Nick Mutz, Kyle Bartsch and Eric Yardley each posted zeroes in their innings of relief work to give the Storm their second straight win over the Quakes.
Rancho Cucamonga has now lost four of its last five games and is now tied atop the California League's South Division with Lancaster, which won tonight against Modesto. It was the second straight game in which the Quakes failed to hold a lead, after doing so in their first 15 contests this season.
The Quakes will try to salvage a series split against Lake Elsinore on Sunday afternoon. Rancho Cucamonga will turn to right-hander Zack Bird (2-0, 3.60 ERA), while the Storm send righty Ronald Herrera (1-1, 4.50 ERA) to the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 1 pm.
