Aces funk continues in Sunday loss

Fresno, Calif. - The Reno Aces' (@Aces) funk continued Sunday afternoon in a 9-2 loss to the Fresno Grizzlies in front of 8,286 fans at Chukchansi Park. The loss is the fourth consecutive for Reno, dropping their record to 8-10.

Fresno's Domingo Santana had a huge day at the plate and put the Aces in an early hole with a three-run home run in the first inning.

Grizzlies' starter Tommy Shirley kept the Aces off the scoreboard, continuing a recent trend for Reno's offense. The southpaw shut out the Aces over five innings before handing the ball off to the bullpen.

It stayed 3-0 until the sixth when Fresno busted the game open with six runs. Nolan Fontana started the inning with a walk and moved to second when lead-off hitter Jonathan Villar singled. L.J. Hoes made it a 4-0 game with an RBI single, and designated hitter Preston Tucker belted a three-run home run to give Fresno a 7-0 lead.

That was all for Aces starter Justin Marks who was charged with seven runs in four-plus innings. Tim Crabbe relieved Marks and retired the first batter he faced before Santana blasted his second homer of the game, a solo shot to right-field. The right-fielder finished 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs and 4 runs driven in.

When the Aces failed to score in the sixth inning, it marked 25 consecutive innings without putting a run on the board. The franchise record is 26 straight innings in May of 2010. With two outs in the top of the seventh, second baseman Danny Worth hit a two-run home run to avoid a new team record.

Matt Pagnozzi (@MattPagnozzi) was the lone Aces player to record a multi-hit game. For the first time in his career, reliever Jake Barrett (@BJBace99) delivered two scoreless innings.

Game three of the four-game set is set for Monday night in Fresno. Right-hander Blake Beavan (0-0, 4.91) starts for the Aces against right-hander Jake Buchanan (1-0, 3.71). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
