Michael Kopech Named SAL Pitcher of the Week
Right-hander threw 10 shutout innings over two starts
Greenville, SC - After a dominant pair of starts on the mound, Greenville Drive right-hander Michael Kopech has been named the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 20th-26th, the league announced on Monday.
The 18-year old delivered two nearly identical starts this week, throwing a combined 10 innings of shutout baseball and allowing only four hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.
He threw five shutout frames in a no-decision against Lexington on Monday the 20th and gave up just two hits with four strikeouts. He followed that up with five more scoreless innings against Asheville on Saturday the 25th, allowing only two hits with three strikeouts to earn his first professional victory.
In three starts during the 2015 campaign, Kopech is 1-1 with a 1.98 ERA and has struck out 11 in 13 2/3 innings while holding opposing batters to a .133 average.
Kopech is the first Drive player to receive South Atlantic League weekly honors in 2015, and he is the first Drive player to win weekly honors since Teddy Stankiewicz was named Pitcher of the Week of June 9th-15, 2014.
