'Birds blank Sounds
Memphis, TN- The Memphis Redbirds were able to shutout the Nashville Sounds Thursday night at AutoZone Park.
Jim Rapoport hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth to plate Mark Shorey, putting the Redbirds up on the board.
Chuckie Fick had his second start as a 'Bird this season and earned his second win. He pitched five innings, allowing four hits while walking one and striking out five. Manager Chris Maloney commented on his performance.
"He throws low, quality strikes, has some sink on the ball and he's got a little funk to him. That all adds up to have some chance to get some outs."
Nashville's reliever Jeff Bennett pitched 1/3 of an inning walking four and allowing two runs on no hits, Memphis leads 3-0 going into the eighth.
The Redbirds bullpen combined to throw four scoreless innings, with Josh Kinney striking out four in his two innings of work and Fernando Salas striking out two to earn the save.
"Great job by the pitchers. They've got a pretty good ball club over there and we shut them out." said Maloney.
