Mudcats' Offense Breaks Loose in 8-2 Win

Peterson and Meneses both finished an extra base hit shy of a cycle
April 29, 2015

LYNCHBURG, VA - Dustin Peterson was 4-for-4 with a home run, Joey Meneses was 3-for-5 with a single, double and a triple as Carolina's offense broke loose with a season high 16 hits in an 8-2 victory versus the Hillcats on Wednesday night at Calvin Falwell Field in Lynchburg.

Peterson was a triple shy of the cycle and Meneses was a home run shy of the same. Carlos Franco had three hits including two doubles for the Mudcats (8-10) in the victory.

Andrew Thurman scattered four Lynchburg (9-11) hits over five scoreless innings and earned the win. He allowed two hits with two outs in the first and two more hits in his fifth and final inning. Thurman (2-2, 3.43) walked three and struck out a season high seven batters in the victory.

Connor Lien drove in Levi Hyams as the first Mudcats run with a groundball single to left in the second. Hyams was hit earlier in the inning by Lynchburg's starter Mitch Brown (1-2, 4.35). It was just the second time that a Mudcats batter was hit by a pitch this season. Brown also hit Johan Camargo later in the frame.

The Mudcats gave their starter an early lead to work with after scoring once in the second and twice more in the third. Peterson started Carolina's two run third with a solo home run and had four hits in the game. The home run was his team best third of the season.

Carolina added one more in the third and then took a 4-0 lead in the fourth when Connor Oliver hit a solo home run to right-center off Brown. It was Oliver's first home run of the season; he was 1-for-5 in the game.

Brown pitched five full innings and allowed 10 hits and four earned runs. He also gave up two home runs, walked one and struck out three in the loss.

The Hillcats managed to get one across in the sixth when catcher Eric Haase hit a solo home run to left off Carolina's Matt Marksberry. The home run cut the Mudcats lead down to 5-1, but the Mudcats answered back in the seventh with another run.

Meneses and Lien both had doubles in the seventh off reliever Benny Suarez. Lien's extra base hit brought in Meneses to put the Mudcats up 6-1 in the game. Suarez allowed a run and two hits in the seventh.

Marksberry, meanwhile, retired the next three he faced in the sixth to get out of the inning with only one run allowed. He came back for the seventh, but would walk the first two batters he faced in the inning and left the game. Dave Peterson followed out of the pen and allowed one inherited runner to score on a Bradley Zimmer double.

Zimmer's double brought the Hillcats within four at 6-2, but the Mudcats came back with two more in the eighth to take an 8-2 lead. Casey Weather worked the eighth for the Hillcats and allowed two runs and two hits in the inning. He also walked one and struck out one. Jose Briceno doubled against a drawn in infield in the eighth and was able to drive in two runs in the inning.

Peterson allowed just one hit in the seventh and would come back out for the eighth. He finished his appearance with two scoreless innings and struck out two.

Tyler Jones pitched the ninth and retired the side in order to finish the game.

The victory evened the series at 1-1 with game three scheduled for Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. in Lynchburg. The Mudcats will have RHP Steve Janas (2-0, 1.00) on the mound for the rubber match start. The Hillcats will counter with RHP Clayton Cook (1-0, 2.70) on Thursday night.
