BayBears Need Extras to Split Pair with Biscuits
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Following a 3-0 shutout loss in game one of their doubleheader on Saturday night at Riverwalk Stadium, the BayBears battled through 12 innings of game two to defeat the Montgomery Biscuits, 4-3, salvaging the finale of their four-game series.
In the opener, southpaw Wade Miley (1-1) was sharp for the BayBears (46-41, 10-9) as he only surrendered two hits. Unfortunately for Miley, both of the hits for the Biscuits (48-39, 10-9) were home runs. Henry Wrigley belted a two-run shot in the first while Drew Anderson cracked a solo homer in the fifth.
Montgomery was paced by lefty David Newmann (3-6) as he tossed five scoreless frames. He nearly allowed a tally in the first when Cyle Hankerd was ruled safe at first when a wild toss from Wrigley to first baseman Leslie Anderson pulled Anderson off the base. He did attempt to swipe tag Hankerd, and Hankerd was called out after an umpires' conference to keep the BayBears off the board.
In the nightcap, the BayBears pulled in front by three in the top of the fifth with four straight hits against starter Jeremy Hall. Jake Elmore doubled home Taylor Harbin while Ollie Linton's single scored Ed Easley. Elmore came home on a double play off the bat of Collin Cowgill.
Montgomery drew closer with a run in the bottom of the fifth against Bryan Henry. Henry allowed just four hits in five innings and was in line for the victory when the lead slipped away in the bottom of the seventh.
Josh Ellis was the recipient of some tough luck as the Biscuits manufactured two runs on three infield singles and a bloop hit to center. Kyler Newby entered the contest to finish the seventh and send the contest to extra innings.
Neither team threatened until the 12th when Evan Frey walked and took second on a wild pitch out to Cowgill. Cowgill then bounced a single to left, scoring Frey with the eventual winning run. Montgomery put a couple men on the bottom of the inning, but Jeff Dietz (S, 2) forced a double play from Drew Anderson to end it. Daniel Stange (1-1) helped keep the BayBears close with a 2.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen following Newby's 2.1 frames of goose eggs.
