Sanchez goes 5-for-5 in Knights' loss
Carlos Sanchez went 5-for-5, registering his first career five-hit game and raising his batting average to .378 on Friday night in Triple-A Charlotte's 5-4 loss to visiting Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The White Sox No. 10 prospect, who began the season in the Majors, doubled leading off the ninth inning for his fifth hit of the night. He later scored, finishing with a pair of doubles and three singles that gave him nine hits in his last three games.
Sanchez singled in the bottom of the first, doubled in the third, added base hits in the fifth and seventh and connected on a line drive to left to start the ninth off RailRiders closer Nick Rumbelow. Matt Davidson, ranked right behind Sanchez in Chicago's system, delivered an RBI single and Trayce Thompson also singled, but Rumbelow stranded both runners by striking out Dan Black and Engel Beltre to end the game.
Friday's effort marked the most hits in a game for the 22-year-old infielder since he went 4-for-5 with a homer last May 25 against Indianapolis. He also had a pair of four-hit games in 2012.
Sanchez competed in Spring Training for the White Sox' second base job, a position that ultimately went to Micah Johnson. He made his big league debut last summer and appeared in one game this season, going 2-for-3 on April 8 at Kansas City before being reassigned to Charlotte. He had 100 at-bats in 28 games with the White Sox last season, hitting .250 with five doubles and five RBIs.
In the Minors, Sanchez produced a solid campaign in his second straight year with the Knights in 2014. He tied for fifth in the International League with six triples, led the team in triples and stolen bases (16), ranked second in hits (160) and total bases (180), tied for third in RBIs (57) and ranked fourth in doubles (19).
Sanchez is listed as a shortstop but has seen time at second base in 16 of the 18 Triple-A games he's played this year. Second was his primary position a year ago as he appeared in 64 games there, 44 at shortstop and two at third.
Knights starter Shawn Haviland (0-2) was charged with four runs on five hits and a walk, striking out six over six innings.
Matt Tracy started for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and allowed a pair of runs on five hits and three walks. He went 3 1/3 innings before Joel De La Cruz (2-0) pitched 3 1/3 scoreless frames for the win.
Ben Gamel and Austin Romine drove in two runs apiece for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, while Jose Pirela contributed three hits and a run scored, bumping his average to .444.
