Kernels walk-off with 7-6 victory in 13 innings

T.J. White scores the game tying run in 9th, winning run in 13th
May 3, 2015

Cedar Rapids, IA - A night after the 23rd no-hitter in Clinton franchise history took just 1:58 to complete, Saturday's matchup between the Cedar Rapids Kernels (13-10) and Clinton LumberKings (9-14) went to 13 innings and finished at an even four hours.

Against Osmer Morales (L, 0-3) in the 13th inning, Pat Kelly, who entered the game as a defensive replacement in the 10th inning, plated T.J. White with a sacrifice fly, as the Kernels followed Clinton's no-hitter Friday night with a walk-off 7-6 win. Trevor Hildenberger (W, 1-1) pitched the final three innings in shutout fashion for the win.

The LumberKings held a lead as large as three, but the Kernels chipped away and stayed in the game. Down to their final out in the bottom of the ninth inning, Nick Gordon, who entered the game as the league leader in RBIs, singled through the gap on the right side of the infield and plated White to tie the game 6-6. Gordon finished with three hits and drove in two runs, and now sits with a league best 18 RBIs. Gordon's ninth inning single came on the first pitch he saw from Peter Miller (BS, 1).

Ahead 4-3 after five innings, Clinton upped its lead to 6-3 with three consecutive hits that began the inning vs. Randy LeBlanc. Nelson Ward and Luis Liberato singled, while a wild pitch allowed Ward to score from third. Estarlyn Morales followed with his team high sixth double, which plated Liberato, Morales' team leading 16th RBI of the season. Cedar Rapids answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame, as a leadoff walk and one-out single issued by Tyler Herb (ND) both came around to score against reliever Rohn Pierce. Zach Larson scored on an RBI single by White, while Max Murphy scored on a Brett Doe sacrifice fly.

Clinton led 6-3 after 5.5 innings, and matched the largest lead they've seen their opponent overcome in 2015. In the loss, Clinton set new season highs for both strikeouts at the plate and on the mound. The LumberKings struck out a season high 16 opposing hitters, but also struck out a season high 19 times at the plate in the loss. Both teams used five pitchers, but it was the final trio for the Kernels, C.K. Irby, Cameron Booser, and Hildenberger who shined. The trio pitched seven shutout innings, allowed only two hits, struck out 11, and walked only three.

With the series tied, both teams will send one of their April stars on the mound to the hill in the finale. Pat Peterson (3-1, 0.87) is set to pitch for Clinton, while the Kernels are scheduled to start righty Felix Jorge (1-1, 1.50). First pitch of the series finale is set for 2:05 CT Sunday afternoon. The LumberKings broadcast can be heard on WCCI 100.3 FM, WCCIRadio.com, and LumberKings.com.
