The Y-Files: Bears CF Westley Moss

Getting to know Yakima's defensive wizard
July 13, 2010

Growing up just outside of Dallas - living in the same house his entire life - Bears center fielder Westley Moss has been around the diamond since he was in diapers.

"My dad used to play and coach softball, so I was at the ballpark as an infant," says Moss. "I didn't start playing though until I was five."

Along with baseball, as a child Moss got out there and played pretty much every sport imaginable. He competed in soccer year-round beginning at age five as well. He then picked up football and began running track in middle school, and continued throughout high school.

In his free time, when not living the dream as a pro baseball player, you can find Westley out on the courts playing pick-up hoops or at the park kicking a soccer ball around.

"I just love sports to death," emphasizes Moss.

But Westley isn't just some mindless jock; he's also a wizard with numbers. As it stands he needs only six more classes to earn his bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of Nevada-Reno.

And if baseball doesn't work out, Moss has quite a fall-back plan: "I'll head back to school to get my master's in civil engineering."

Moss tries to leave the numbers out of his mind however, when he's on the playing field.

"I don't think about stats too much," states Westley. "When you start to look at stats you can start to worry and it can affect your game."

Though he does verify, with a smile, he would be able to tabulate in his head the on-base percentage of all of his teammates.

Moss' true passion on the diamond, and his best asset, is his defense. He's made several incredible catches on the warning track to save the Bears a handful of runs.

"Whether I'm hitting great or hitting [poorly] I know my purpose on the team is to play defense," says Moss. "Right now I just have to keep making plays to help the team win."

As of now his future designing bridges will have to be put on hold, because Westley continues to fulfill his purpose for the Bears with web gem after web gem in the outfield.
