James Russell selected, Parker designated

Germen optioned to Iowa, Negrin placed on DL

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Chicago Cubs today selected the contract of left-handed pitcher James Russell from Triple-A Iowa. Furthermore, right-handed pitcher Gonzalez Germen has been optioned to Iowa, right-hander Blake Parker has been designated for assignment and right-hander Yoanner Negrin was placed on the 7-Day disabled list retroactive to May 4.

 

Russell, 29, did not allow a run in 9.2 Triple-A innings. He earned three saves and two wins in relief, and is ranked first in the Pacific Coast League in fewest baserunners per nine innings (3.72; 4 BR/9.2IP). Russell is also tied for first in the league in fewest walks per nine innings with zero in 9.2 innings.

 

Germen, 27, began the season with Iowa, going 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 4.2 innings over four appearances. He struck out five to only three walks. He had his contract purchased by Chicago on April 20 and went on to allow five earned runs in 6.0 innings across six appearances with eight strikeouts to five walks.

 

Parker, 29, had no record and a 2.70 ERA (1 ER/3.1 IP) in three outings with Iowa this season. He is 2-3 with one save and a 3.68 ERA (30 ER/73.1 IP) in 74 relief appearances covering three seasons with the Cubs (2012-14).


Negrin, 25, is 0-0 with 13 strikeouts in 16.2 innings over seven appearances for Iowa. He has a 3.78 ERA (7ER/16.2IP) in two starts and five stints out of the I-Cubs bullpen.
