Generals Receive Top Pitching Prospect Diaz

Edwin Diaz transferred to Jackson; Stephen Landazuri promoted to Tacoma
May 14, 2015

Jackson, Tenn. - The Seattle Mariners announced that right-handed pitcher Edwin Diaz, the top pitching prospect in the organization, will join the Jackson Generals. Diaz comes to Jackson after a successful stint with the Advanced-A Bakersfield Blaze. In a corresponding move, right-handed pitcher Stephen Landazuri has been promoted to the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers from the Jackson Generals.

Baseball Prospectus tabbed Diaz as Seattle's No. 5 overall prospect while Baseball America and MLB Pipeline rank the Naguabo, Puerto Rico native at No. 6 and No. 7, respectively. Diaz opened 2015 with the Bakersfield Blaze, going 2-0 with 42 strikeouts and a microscopic 1.70 ERA over seven starts.

He joined the Seattle organization as the 98th overall pick in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft. A third round selection that year, Diaz was also named the 2013 Appalachian League Pitcher of the Year with the Pulaski Mariners.

Landazuri, a member of Jackson's Opening Day roster, worked in the Generals rotation prior to his promotion to Tacoma. He went 0-2 with a 4.61 ERA through six appearances, including shutout starts in three of his first four outings this season.

Prior to the start of the 2015 regular season, Landazuri was a non-roster invitee to Spring Training. He was a 22nd round pick for the Mariners in 2010 and is moving up to Triple-A for the first time in his professional career.

Jackson's roster remains at 25 active players along with six on the disabled list. Diaz will wear #20 for the Generals.
