Sanchez Recalled to Chicago on Friday

May 15, 2015

(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - Carlos Sanchez - who earned International League Batter of the Week honors twice this season - was recalled to Chicago today, as announced by the White Sox. Sanchez, 22, is currently second in the IL this season in hits (45) and fifth in batting average with a .344 mark. Taking the roster spot left vacant by Sanchez will be second baseman Micah Johnson, who was optioned down to Charlotte on Thursday from Chicago. Johnson will be active for tonight's 7:05 p.m. game against the Syracuse Chiefs at BB&T Ballpark. In one other roster move today, RHP Javy Guerra was placed on the disabled list (retroactive to May 13). Charlotte's active roster is set at 24 players.

A native of Maracay, Venezuela, Sanchez hit safely in 22 of his 29 games this season with the Charlotte Knights. On May 1, Sanchez went a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate and eventually strung together a hit in nine-consecutive at-bats after a 4-for-4 day at the plate the next day. Over the two-day stretch, the 22-year-old reached base in 10-straight plate appearances and was 9-for-9 with four runs scored, three doubles, two home runs, and seven RBIs. He homered from both sides of the plate on May 2 - driving in a career-best seven RBIs.

For his efforts this season, Sanchez earned IL Batter of the Week honors for the period of April 13-19 and the period of April 27-May 3.

Originally signed by the Chicago White Sox as a free agent on May 6, 2009, Sanchez ranks fourth in Charlotte Knights franchise history in hits with 287. A career .288 hitter over seven Minor League seasons (526 games), Sanchez hit .293 (128-for-437) with 60 runs scored, 19 doubles, six triples, seven home runs, and 57 RBIs for the Knights last season in 110 games. He led the 2014 Knights in triples and stolen bases (16).

Sanchez becomes the fifth Knights player promoted to Chicago this season joining LHP Carlos Rodon, RHP Scott Carroll, RHP Daniel Webb, and RHP Chris Beck. Webb and Beck have since returned to Charlotte.

Johnson, 24, hit .270 (20-for-74) with two doubles, three RBIs, eight runs scored, and three stolen bases over 27 games this season for the White Sox. He entered the season ranked as the number four prospect in Chicago's system by Baseball America. Last season for the Knights, Johnson hit .275 (75-for-273) with 10 doubles, five triples, two home runs and 28 RBIs in 65 games.

The first place Charlotte Knights will open a three-game series with the Syracuse Chiefs starting tonight at BB&T Ballpark, which was recently named by Baseball America as the "Best Ballpark in Minor League Baseball".
