James Loney Named to All-PCL Team

August 28, 2006
COLORADO SPRINGS: The Pacific Coast League has announced its 2006 All-PCL Team, featuring the League's best players at every position including right-handed and left-handed starting pitchers, as well as a relief pitcher. The prestigious team is selected annually by vote of the PCL's field managers and media representatives.

For the second consecutive season, Jeff Mathis of the Salt Lake Bees has been honored as the All-PCL catcher. Tucson Sidewinders standout and PCL hits leader (153 hits) Alberto Callaspo was selected at the second base position and is joined in the middle infield by teammate prospect Stephen Drew at shortstop. James Loney of the Las Vegas 51s was named the League's top first baseman and currently leads the league in batting average with a staggering mark of .376. Holding down the other corner spot is Sacramento River Cats third baseman Scott McClain who has 25 home runs and 102 runs batted in on the season.

The All-PCL outfield selections have proven their worth both in the field and at the plate during the 2006 campaign. Jeff Baker of the Colorado Springs Sky Sox is among the League leaders in RBI with a total of 98, while Scott Hairston has hit 25 homers for the Sidewinders this season. Reggie Willits of the Salt Lake Bees, currently hitting .327 with 31 stolen bases, rounds out the outfield crew. The designated hitter spot was claimed by slugger Jon Knott of the Portland Beavers, the current PCL leader in home runs and RBI with 28 and 104, respectively.

On the mound, Round Rock Express ace Jason Hirsh was chosen as the top right-handed pitcher after winning 12 consecutive decisions and posting an earned run average of 2.10 before his call up to Houston in early August. Rich Hill of the Iowa Cubs is 7-and-1 with an impressive 1.80 ERA and has a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 135-to-21 as the PCL's top southpaw hurler. The relief pitcher spot went to Colorado Springs closer Nate Field, who currently leads the PCL in saves with 24.
