May 20, 2015

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - With their second win in a row and third in Mobile, the Barons claimed the series over the BarBears with a 5-4 extra-inning victory Tuesday night in the fourth game of the five-game set.

Starting pitcher Frankie Montas allowed just three runs on seven hits in his sixth start of the year. The right hander struck out five and left the game with a 4-3 lead, but the BayBears scored a clutch run in the bottom of the ninth to take the contest into extra innings.

First baseman Danny Hayes got the Barons on the board first in the first inning with an RBI single to center to score Courtney Hawkins, but Mobile answered back with a run in the bottom of the inning to knot the game 1-1 after one inning, and took the lead in the third on an RBI single to put Birmingham down 2-1.

The Barons big inning came in the fourth and the scoring began on a bases-loaded walk to Jeremy Farrell. With three Birmingham runners aboard, Jacob May ripped a liner to right to plate Adrian Nieto and Brian Fletcher. Mobile scored once more in the bottom of the fourth to set the game 4-3 in favor of the Barons.

Reliever Miguel Chalas held the BayBears to one hit for two innings before giving way to Cody Winiarski to close it out, but a solo home run from Alex Glenn tied the game 4-4 and faulted the right-handed hurler with a blown save.

Birmingham took a 5-4 lead in the extra on a fielding error charged to shortstop Sean Jamieson. With Hawkins and Hayes on base with two outs, Jamieson mishandled a hard-hit ball off the bat of catcher Martin Medina, allowing Hawkins to score from third. Winiarski returned for the bottom of the 10th to pick up the win.

The final game of the series is set for 11:05 a.m. Wednesday morning. Right-hander Tyler Danish (4-0, 2.77 ERA) gets the start for Birmingham and A.J. Schugel (0-1, 7.50 ERA) gets the start for Mobile. With the win, the Barons improve to 19-20 while the BayBears fall to 20-19.

The Barons wrap up the series with Mobile Wednesday and travel directly to Huntsville, Ala., Thursday to take on the Biloxi Shuckers for a five-game series. The Barons return to Birmingham May 27 for the annual Rickwood Classic at Rickwood Field. They host the Jacksonville Suns for five, with the final four contests played at Regions Field.
