Asheville Outlasts Savannah 5-3

May 26, 2015

SAVANNAH, GA-- Runs are not easy to come by at Historic Grayson Stadium in Savannah, but the Asheville Tourists pounded out 13 hits and scored five times en route to a 5-3 win over the Savannah Sand Gnats. Three of their five runs came after the sixth inning as Asheville overcame a one-run deficit to snap their four-game skid.

The Tourists jumped out to a 1-0 lead with three hits in the top of the first inning. Josh Fuentes singled home Omar Carrizales for the game's initial run. The Sand Gnats tied the game in the bottom of the third when Eudor Garcia plated Jonathan Johnson with a single to center.

Asheville took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth. Once again it was Fuentes connecting with an RBI single plating Carrizales. The Gnats responded with two in the bottom of the fifth. Trailing by a run, Asheville used a Sand Gnat, mistake heavy seventh to score the tying and go-ahead run.

In the bottom of the eighth with the score 4-3, the Sand Gnats had Stefan Sabol at second with two outs. Vincente Lupo singled into left and Sabol attempted to score. Wes Rogers fielded the ball and threw a one hop strike to home plate. Dom Nunez applied the tag to Sabol and that prevented the tying run from scoring. Drew Weeks then doubled home an insurance run in the ninth for Asheville.

Zach Jemiola notched his sixth win of the year by going strong six innings. The Tourists right-hander worked out of a number of jams to keep Asheville in the game. On two separate occasions, Jemiola recorded a strikeout while the Sand Gnats had a runner at third base with one out. Both times the player was left at third at the end of the inning.

Blake Shouse, Josh Michalec, and Jerry Vasto each worked a scoreless inning in relief. Carrizales, Fuentes, and Emerson Jimenez all finished with three hits while Fuentes and Weeks both drove in two runs. The series continues in Savannah on Tuesday with a 7:05pm first pitch.
