Julia Clukey Day at Hadlock Field on June 4th
Thursday, June 4 will be Julia Clukey Day at the Portland Sea Dogs. Olympian Julia Clukey is from Augusta, Maine and competes in the sport of luge. Clukey will be recognized by the team as an education all-star for her outreach to young Mainers through both her summer camp for girls and school presentations at schools across the state about setting goals and making good decisions.
At the Sea Dogs game, she will throw out the first pitch, sign autographs and join the radio broadcast for an interview to discuss her accomplishments and future plans. Fans will also receive a Julia Clukey poster at the autograph table.
In 2014, Clukey was inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame for her successes, including competing in the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, Canada. Last month, she was named to the 2015 US national luge team.
Olympian Julia Clukey's outreach and educational efforts include her curriculum development for Julia Clukey's Camp for girls and her more than 35 presentations to students across the state as part of her work with the Maine Beer & Wine Distributors Association (MBWDA) to encourage students to set goals and make good decisions. Since 2010, she has partnered with the MBWDA on their responsibility initiative by recording PSAs and visiting many high schools across the state to talk with students about the importance of good decision making. Through the initiative, she has reached more than 12,000 Maine students.
Each summer, Julia hosts "Julia Clukey's Camp for Girls at Camp KV" on Maranacook Lake in Readfield, Maine. The 10-day summer camp is designed for girls ages 8-11 as a place to develop self-confidence and a healthy lifestyle, and features a wide range of activities including swimming, kayaking, hiking, nature walks, field sports, arts and crafts, theater, and music.
