Cardinals trounce Travelers

September 2, 2006
Gabe Johnson and Jarrett Hoffpauir drove in four runs apiece as visiting Springfield crushed Arkansas, 17-2, on Saturday.

The Cardinals' 17 runs set a franchise record, surpassing the 16 they scored against Wichita on July 18.

Johnson, who went 2-for-5, blasted a grand slam in the third inning and singled and scored in an eight-run ninth. Hoffpauir, who was 3-for-6, singled and scored in the third, slapped an RBI single in the fourth and slugged a three-run homer, his seventh, in the ninth.

Juan Richardson belted his team-leading 17th homer, a two-run shot. Nick Stavinoha went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and scored twice, while Cody Haerther was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI for Springfield, which pounded out 18 hits.

The Cardinals (27-42) were also helped by Arkansas' defense as the Travelers committed a season-high seven errors.

Springfield starter Blake Hawksworth (4-2) pitched seven solid innings and won his third straight decision. He allowed two runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out eight.

Arkansas starter Chris Hunter (4-14) lasted 2 2/3 frames and surrendered eight runs -- five earned -- on seven hits and five walks.

Bobby Wilson and Tim Duff each drove in a run and Terry Evans had two hits for the Travelers (26-42), who have lost 14 of their last 17 games. --Chip Haunss/MLB.com
