Mario Brothers Lead Bees Over Swing

September 4, 2006
Davenport, IA (September 3, 2006) - Mario Santiago pitched 7.2 strong innings and Mario Lisson had three hits including a home run to lead the Burlington Bees (29-40, 64-72) to a 6-1 victory over the Swing of the Quad Cities (41-27, 75-61) at John O'Donnell Stadium tonight. The Bees lead this season-ending series 2-1 and the season series 5-4.

Santiago (3-6) retired the first 12 batters of the game before allowing a leadoff walk to Tyler Greene in the bottom of the fifth inning. Bryan Anderson followed up the walk with a single to right for the Swing's first hit. Greene moved to third on a flyout to the wall and the Swing stole their only run when Anderson took off for second and got in a rundown, allowing Greene to score. That tied the game as the Bees had gotten on the board in the fourth. Lisson reached on a one-out single, stole second, and scored on a base hit by Carlos Arroyo. It was Lisson's 41st stolen base of the season, moving him into second on the franchise career list with 64.

The Bees added on against Swing starter Donnie Smith (4-2) in the sixth. Arroyo followed up a leadoff walk to Brady Everett with a two-run homer to right-center. It was Arroyo's second homer of the year, with the first coming last Wednesday at Cedar Rapids. After a flyout, Valentino Arce singled to knock Smith out of the ballgame. Jason Motte came in and got a strikeout, but walked Ethien Santana and gave up a single to Jose Duarte that brought in Arce to extend the lead to 4-1.

Lisson led off the top of the seventh with a homer to left-center. It was his 13th home run of the season, tying Miguel Vega for the team lead. With one out, Arroyo doubled to left-center and scored on a two-out single by Arce to cap the scoring. Danny Borne finished the final two innings in relief for the Swing.

Santiago reached his pitch limit after retiring the first two batters in the bottom of the eighth. The 7.2 innings matched his season and career-high, set against the Quad Cities on August 20th. Rayner Oliveros came out of the bullpen and got the final four outs to finish the game without allowing a baserunner.

The Bees and Swing wrap up the regular season tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 at John O'Donnell Stadium. RH David Henninger (3-6, 4.92) will start for the Bees against RH Adam Ottavino (2-3, 3.63) for the Swing.
